Warhammer 40,000 ITC Tactica Report: T’au Empire vs Chaos 2000pts

Avatar Tabletop Tactics December 14, 201913  46 13 Likes

Two highly resilient armies face each other in this ITC mission, but can Bone emulate the recent success enjoyed by the T’au, or will Chef’s Chaos Soup be enough to stop them in their tracks in this tournament format game?

Have played Austin’s Plaguebearer army many times, always a tough go of it, but he’s a really great list designer on the whole.

Hey Chef, nice game. Have you thought about taking Epidemius?

Cheers

Fun game (despite both sides being annoying denial lists 😉 ).
As Jeffrey Hart points out, think Richard is on record on some podcast or other that the rise of his Tau build is directly tied to the rise in Codex Marines (and the connected vanishing from scene of the ‘JV’ plague bearer list).
Interestingly, the other big champion of the plague bearer Smite list in first half of ITC list (TJ) seems to have evolved his list into a Magnus-totting machine (pre CA admittedly, be interesting to see if it still functions).

The fast way to doing disgustingly resilient vs damage 2. Say you take 10 wounds at damage 2, you roll 10 DS saves, then you roll the successes again. so in the example of taking 10 wounds, you make four 5+ DS saves, then you roll those 4 again and make one 5+, meaning one plaguebearer made both. If you have reroll 1’s you would reroll the 1’s in the first 10 saves, then reroll any 1’s in the 2nd group of saves.

I’m really looking forward to the upcoming space marine filth, keep the tactica reports coming!

Bad luck there, Bone. Don’t feel too bad. In reality against a meta list like this you would be wanting to play many practice games against it to figure out how to deal with all those plague bearers. Richard obviously has a plan for Plaguebearer spam so it would be interesting to see how he handles such things. Obviously the key issue was that you lost on board control here. I don’t know Tau very well so I am not sure how Tau players deal with objectives. I am assuming that they break up the castle and land their riptides… Read more »

Since they have the NURGLE and DAEMON keywords and faction keywords couldn’t you just plug in blight haulers, plagueburst crawlers, or really any daemon engine with the mark of nurgle, without giving up battleforged?

I am still confused on the change, I know the only shared word can’t be CHAOS, but wouldn’t you still have access to Nurgle Daemon stratagems if you through one in your detachment?

Marines are oppressive for 4 main reasons compounded with their disgusting insta-take 2 CP dice generator > board control > alpha strike > volume of fire >anti-charge overwatch In ITC they also have extended value with LOS rules for their infantry and also get extra value from their sniper units, thunderfire canons and wyverns. Tau can weather a storm so alpha striking and volume of fire is taken care of… and they don’t want to charge so off the bat their classic list triptide just counters 3 things marines want to do…. alpha striking, anti charge overwatch and volume of… Read more »

Nice, very well played Chef, I think Bone needed to push a bit more turn 2 and avoid to screen with the small drone units, he was giving up kill more because of that.

Don’t forget Chef, it’s not just an extra cast, but an extra 6″ on casts as well! Casting Warptime at 9″ instead of 3″ is pretty huge

One very minor thing – is there a way to format the list section such that it is collapsible? Scrolling past it to get to the comments is annoying. #firstworldproblems

After seeing the Nurgle princes so many times I actually looked at them again in the batrep. That is one seriously awesome conversion going on there…

I have a question about facing Tau lists that I don’t really understand why people wouldn’t do it. Say there is a Riptide, with 5 squads of let’s say 3 shield drones each. Instead of shooting at each squad, why would someone not shoot at the Riptide and force the saviour protocols. This would mean that high rate of fire weapons would kill far more drones than just shooting them individually, furthermore you chance getting wounds through on the riptide anyway if they fail the saviour role. I do understand that any damage 2 weapons would just become 1 mortal… Read more »

This result was somewhat predictable when from the start. At the end of the game, you discuss it being an anti-meta anti-meta list. In actuality, the Chaos list was helping to suppressing the Tau lists earlier in the year. Tau had been on the verge of being good, but Eldar flyers and Chaos were keeping Tau down because of the modifiers to hit. Then marines came in with their mass re-rolls and made Chaos and Eldar Flyers more rare, which has now allowed Tau to come toward the front because their bad matchups are diminished and they have the ability… Read more »

Great game, it has been such a pleasure to watch. Experienced gentlemen have a battle of witts with good sportsmanship, that is why I love Tactica. Also really happy to see the whole cast together and the new studio starting to bear fruit. Keep it up!

PS. It would be nice to have those ITC scoring cards back just to help visualize where the points are coming from…

Bone, I know it is frustrating to play from a bland codex, but I guess your biggest mistake is in the list-building. You see, your list is very survivable but in the wrong way for ITC. By having 10 small units of 2 shield drones you are giving up so many points for “Kill more” just cuz you will never get to kill 6+ units in a turn even against AM or GSCs. So my suggestion is to get more 6-8 drone units so that your opponent is forced to work harder to get “Kill more”. And the second thing,… Read more »

Great game. Exactly what a tactica is all about. Very well played by Chef putting the squeeze on Bone. I agree with the Chap below. Tau vs Marines please.

Its fascinating as someone who has only dipped their toes into competitive play to watch someone play effectively and for three turns effectively forgo the shooting and charge/fight phases. I understand why this was but I know my instinct would be if I’m in range to attack to do it.

I wonder if this strategy only works for ITC when you’re trying to rack up secondary points consistently. If this was a matched play scenario from CA2019 with the same armies would that kind of strategy work?

Cheers for the game guys! Really interesting as always. Was hard for me to tell who would win in the beginning but looking back on the game it’s pretty obvious as you guys covered.

Small suggestion. I love the after battle round discussions with the players. Would be nice to also have one either before or after deployment (maybe after) just to go over their tactics going into the mission and how they approached deployment / the board. As always thanks guys! Bosses all around.

This game was really interesting, thank you! I tend to dislike drone spam, but it’s the idea more than anything else cause there’s no one that plays Tau were I live, so I never experienced it. There’s one guy who plays plaguebearers horde but I have still to confront him, too, so I can’t comment much on what you said in the post game, but it all seemed very reasonable and well argued.
I would definitively like to see this Tau list against some tactica level marine army!
