In the last few years Games Workshop have released some the best models they have ever produced, but there’s still quite a few that have missed the mark or could desperately use some help. We sit down to put forward who we think most needs some TLC and who thus is the Ugliest Model in 40k!

Fun story!
I took my eight year old to the local GW at the weekend… of all the models to pick, of course he wanted the ATV to build with me. I couldn’t say no even though I was screaming inside haha. He will learn one day!
I’m voting Carnifex, it is iconic, and needs the glow up, as you guys said, Chaos and the ultrsmurfs have an amazing large range, there’s plenty to play with instead of the space red -yellow toy car, or the LEGO crab, I have yet to fight a Nid army that didn’t have a Carnifex in it
Defiler – because as a concept it has sooooo much potential. It’s begging for a redesign to tie in with the newer ‘biomechanical’ look the chaos deamon engine range has. As for the ATV…yes its repulsive but its also so redundant that I’d simply prefer it not to exist. Honestly I don’t think the carnifex is that bad. Yes it’s a bit too hunched over. I get the ‘I only see its spines’ argument, but its just an old kit, limited by the tech of its time. Its not ugly per say.

I really like the carnifex haha. I find the primaris range ugly in the sense they ruined the aesthetic of marines and now just look like a 3rd parties attempt at legally distinct marines. They look like they’ve been made my teenagers just sticking guns on stuff. Genuinely think they ruined marines. However, to pick out individual ugly models; Inquisitor Corteaz. I mean he’s horrible now. I do not understand what they were going for. He looks like a baby in a dustbin. The new Deathleaper. It just doesn’t suit the range. ATV must go – it is so stupid. I love converting models, so I can see how I can improve Defiler or Carnifex, but converting ATV means you scratch build something else (like an outrider attack bike etc).
Katie I agree with you. The Carnifex needs a refresh its just not super aggressive and menacing
iirc that Catachan kit has been around since 1998, there are people selling that in GW stores younger than that kits been around
Bard noooo!!!! I love the ATV! I think it looks so cool, it’s essentially an updated version of the attack bike and he’s my favourite boi.
(Also, I have been growing fond of the desolation marines. The sergeant with his ridiculously big gun is a bit silly but otherwise I quite like them. 👀)
Defiler, absolutely. Go read Gaunt’s Ghost 3 Necropolis (written before the Defiler came out); the creepy many-legged spider tanks that climbs up the hive walls and scale the defenses seem super scary in the book, and the Defiler is clearly based on that idea.
It was just never ever scary – it was rubbish in 2002 when it came out; it is eye-gouging rubbish now. An Invader ATV with 2 canifexes as crew would still look better than the Defiler. 🙂
The defiler for sure, the Carnifex update has to happen. Next edition that’s almost a given. The ATV just needs to disappear and bring back attack bikes, the marine range has no flavor, but it sells.
The worst model is Inquisitor Coteaz in his power armoured nappy. The most disappointing models are the new sanguinary guard.
But of those three, it’s the ATV. It should be taken out and shot, along with the desolation marines
No mention of the Mechanicus Dunerider? It’s literally just a small box.
I’d also put the Dark Angel Darkshroud up for consideration. The Vengeance is decent. Could stand to lose the guy with the heavy bolter and just let the pilot have the trigger, but the massive guns with crew independently handling the turret works nicely. Then the Darkshroud instead has a statue. Which is very 40k and all, but it still has the gunner. Aiming a statue. Gently swivelling side to side to wave at the audience as they fly past.
In my opinion, i think the Slith looks like it belongs in the “Guardian’s of the Galaxy” comic produced in the 70ies(yes, I am aging myself ;p) I honestly did a little conversion with my Invader ATV to make it look more like a Mad Max chariot, a bald headed, face grilled Blade Guard in the back with one hand holding a huge Black templar banner and torches instead of the antenna so agree its a bit to generic. and BTW its not a go cart, its a mini tumbler ;), In the end, I personally am voting Beards choice.… Read more »
If we are talking about models with the potential for a huge glow up, then the current Huron Blackheart must be near the top of the list. Seeing what was done with Abaddon, there is an opportunity to sculpt a stunning miniature with a really imposing stature befitting his lore rather than the derpy model we have now. Honestly I’m surprised he is still in the Codex given how old the model is.
Give the Tyrant of Badab the model he deserves!
The go kart is definitely bad, but by far the ugliest model has to be the new Cortez. They took one of the coolest pieces of splash art in all of 40k and turned the model into a chubby guy in a onesie
Carnifex gets my vote as needing a redo for sure, considering how monsterous the range refresh models were it just looks a bit out of place now. I’d have loved to see the Catachan get refreshed too, I adore the Krieg but the Forgeworld models still held up, we’d have been okay waiting another edition for more plastic kits!
Slander! The old Dred/Hell brute design is so much better than the primaris ones. They have an old but powerful feel. A new model a bit bigger would be amazing. The primaris dreds are oversized and just look like genetic sci fi machines, not 40k.
Defiler to be redone, go kart thingy to be deleted. Don’t forget the defiler kit also does the soul grinder, which is truly awful.
The carnifex looks like it is going to roll through terrain, the defiler is weird and creepy keeping with Chaos, the ATV looks like halo meets Mario kart, the ATV must go. But, I think bloodletter Jinx should DEFINITELY be a model.
So the defiler, take its top off and put the top half of the hell brute 😆
If the point of the vote is to pick the model you want to see redone, then my vote goes to the Defiler. I agree 100% with James that the Invader ATV shouldn’t exist, so the model shouldn’t be remade. As for Tyrannids, I don’t like them as an army.
Those Mario carts are the worst thing. I remember when the defiler came out and it was awesome I remwbrr when they new carnivores came out and they where great. When those go carts came out they where instantly not likes as a model.by the majority of the community. Replace them with like a heave Armored bike like bard says

I’m with Beard on this one. The Defiler is just…. no. Chaos in general is in need of an overhaul tbh. Death Guard, and now Emperors Children, excluded of course.

It’s certainly nostalgia, but I really like the Defiler model. An upgrade would be welcome of course, but I was most disappointed that it’s not an option in the new EC codex. I had visions of starting that faction, with a Defiler and other ranged firepower at it’s core.
And though it doesn’t quite match up to more recent Tyranid releases, I also really like the Carnifex model, because I remember that releasing and at the time it was a fantastic upgrade over the previous 2001 metal/plastic combo model that was constantly falling apart!
Landspeeders are probably the models most in need of an update
Defiler. Its just… you can see how it was designed all the years back by kitbash… but outside 2nd edition this one doesn’t fit any 40k table.
Mario cart is not the worst Primaris design. Fixing that one won’t fix so many other 90s-kid toys that range has.
Personally – Flamers need a redo. That are the only models I gave up as I was painting them. I couldn’t get myself to care enough to properly finish them.

Feel I need to adress Horu Heresy Ahriman. Such an important model but job half done.
Look at Magnus/Amon/Librarian consul/etc.
But poor chief librarian Ahzek Ahriman is quite underwhelming.
DEFINITELY defiler needs changing. Surprised none of you put catachans as number 1 too!
Carnifex is fine, Defiler is goofy but should get merged with the Soul Grinder into one unit with multiple super crazy chaos options, ATV I would love to be like a Halo Warthog, but then that’s too much into speeder territory. So just get rid of it!
Having read through the comments, I am 100% not in the winning group here, but I genuinely do not understand the level of hatred folks have for the ATV. Is it good? Of course not, but unlike the other two, it’s also not actively bad. The defiler definitely needs to be redone it is shocking and just looks out of place. I did like the honourable mention of the hell brute, maybe once they’ve done all 4 Chaos codexs they’ll do a whole new multi kit with multiple carapace/legs depending on you’re favoured god.
Also quick mention for the carnifex surely old one eye needs to grow as he isn’t much better?

I think the Carnifex is ok and definitely way better than either the Defiler or ATV. It would have to be the Defiler for me.
I agreed with beard I’ve always thought the defiler is stupid looking especially compared to the soul grinder which looks really disturbing.
Maybe because I’m not a Tyranid player but I don’t think the Carnifex is that bad. I kind of feel like it should be hulking and crouched rather than standing necessarily.
The ATV should just be binned. If you were going to remake it you could do a Halo Warthog type thing, but that would be better for Guard anyway (specifically Catachans!). Space Marines don’t need it. Just bin it!
The defiler definitely has the most potential. I would love to see a Brass Scorpion centaur type thing. Defiler takes it for me.
For the redo, I have to vote the Carnifex. I would love to see one with a modern redo after playing SM2. It just needs to be more like the boss monsters they’re supposed to be. The Invader, on the other hand, deserves nothing other than damnatio memoriae. Its very existence is an affront to the universe itself. I would say defiler. First time I saw it (unpainted), I thought it was an ork vehicle. I saw a kitbash of a defiler into an ork walker, looked awesome.
According to the comments I’ll be in an incredible minority here, but I “like” the ATV. I don’t think it’s like, awesome, and definitely is another thing in Space Marines that lacks grim-dark for suuurre (which I agree is a problem), but right away my brain went to Halo Co-op Warthog run and I felt attached to it lol. The defiler and carnifex both have incredible potential but I think the carnifex is more iconic and so deserves it.

I have to vote ATV. As a White Scars player I’m forced to use them.
I vote Defiler. As a centrepiece model for a largely excellent range, it’s so out of place and derpy!
A. The defiler needs to get in the sea, and be re-done. The model is TRRRRAAASSHH.
B. The fact the Chaos spawn didn’t make any of your lists is frankly outrageous.
A model that looks like ditto failing to transform simultaneously into Jynx and Mr Mime, it’s stoopid and not at all scary. Hell, Total War did a fantastic job of spawns! Use those!
