Thanks for the review and beginner friendly approach there Mr the Spider Sir.
I’m curious given the roughly £500 price tag for entry currently to get the basic gear, assuming as good hobbyist we already have much of the cleanings supplies etc, how many models you can expect per resin container and how much, i.e. what would you estimate the cost per mini is? So when is this actually saving you money…
Also, as per comments below given the toxicity of the resin and lack of ventilation this really isn’t something I can look at easily sadly.

I ordered a Saturn but cancelled it because I was concerned about the fumes and did not have a ventilation setup to handle it. I also realized that what I wanted the printer for, printing terrain, could also be handled by an FDM printer. Went with a FDM Bamboo P1P and couldn’t be happier. The thing comes dialed in out of the box and when the print is done it is actually done, unless you have supports. The P1P can do miniatures to a surprisingly passable level, but nowhere near the quality of a resin printer. However for terrain it… Read more »

Hey Lawrence, your results look nice, just to begin with 😉 Just as a sort-of disclaimer, i’ve been resin-printing ever since Elegoo released their first Mars model, one the first resin printers available in Europe at a consumer friendly pricetag, currently i use a Saturn 4. Three things: First, do not trust the manufacturers recommendations on the different resins all too much. Look for “calibration stls”, many of them are available for free, simple Google research will do the trick. I have 2 of the Saturn 3 Ultras along with a Mars 2 and Mars 3, all the Printers have been great until they go wrong and then they require a large time investment and patience to get working again, 3D printing is a hobby on its own and there are just a couple of things i would suggest. If possible in the studio box off the 3D printers, this will reduce the fumes even further and make it generally safe to work in the same room as the printers, it will also make it easier to regulate the temp… Read more »

really interesting to see how you got on. I think most people would struggle a lot more with this as beginners. You seem to have done extremely well! (under Josh’s close supervision of course 🙂 ) I’ve done a lot of 3d printing in the past few years using PLA in an FDM plastic printer which has been a massive learning experience but I’ve never had the opportunity to use resin. This was a really interesting video! As a fellow complete noob tempted by 3d printing I’m pleased to see a nice introduction video into using this equipment!

I’m curious about the clean up required after printing models? Did the printer and other equipment need a lot of cleaning?

I’m excited to see some 3d printed terrain on future battle reports!

Thanks for this primer, Lawrence. I’ve been interested in 3D printing for a while but this is the first thing that’s showed me it’s actually not feasible in my space. It’s a bit weird to say thanks for showing me I CAN’T do something, but it’s good to finally have an answer! I’ll have to find some other way to get bits and terrain on demand…

This is more for beginners and home hobbyists as I imagine as a business you have a proper ventilation system in place but I’d recommend you obtain an industry grade pm 2.5 and pm 10.0 detector and leave it in your ventilated space while a print is running and during the whole process. Resin printing regulation is non existent and the filters that come with printers are great at masking the smell but do not reduce the level of carcinogenic particles. Better safe than sorry and causing lung damage for the sake of some cheaper minis

It’s really cool to see you on your 3d printing journey. I too have a saturn 3 ultra and it’s an AMAZING printer. I think the most critical part in 3d printing is getting the exposure settings correct. I’ve found that downloading the XP2 validation stl is the easiest way to pin point your exposure settings. I’d recommend a channel Fauxhammer for any beginner tips you need.
