would love to see some zoanthrope spam or something resembling a list that has had success at a tournament from Tyranids or GSC. Love the BRs as always guys, just seems like you miss on those.

Well that Titan Gate looks a bit bloody good! Can see that it caused a bit of a problem in relation to terrain but fair play for giving us the classic Tyranid invasion theme. Would you ever consider a Narrative report instead of a Battle report? It doesn’t quite work in a standard pointed game, but give the Nids a whole swathe of reinforcements. Maybe work it into the rules? Say the Nids hold an objective they get to roll for X amount of models, if the Marines hold more they get to call in an orbital bombardment? I rather… Read more »

Great to see the trygon out and about finally. If you use it again Beard I recommend trying murderous size and arachnacyte glands on it for eating marines.
Tricky fighting marines, an exocrine with dermic symbiosis in a Kronos fleet (with their new psychic power) works a treat. Can usually wipe a unit of 10 intercessors with that beauty.

I think you guys made a good point last time you used marines; a casual marines list needs to play against a competitive [any other army] list in order to have a game.
Would love to see marines being hyper-specialised and powerful, but very elite and expensive. Here’s hoping the new codex brings something cool to the mix!

Ofc one codex here is stronger than the other (we all know marines are strong), but guys, you have practically no terrain on this board apart the ruins in the deployment zones.
Codex balance is one thing but I just don’t see how you can have a close game with one melee focused and one shooting focused army if you can see from everywhere to everywhere on the mid board.
With a different terrain setup I think you would have a lot more interesting game 🙂

It’s already been said but deserves repeating: That terrain exacerbated the army disparity. Friendship is the only reason a tyranid player would have bothered playing that out.

hmm not sure I’ll watch the rest of this after turn 1.. Really not the right nids list to bring against such an OP marine army unfortunately.
Bone totally summed it up with his comments at this point.
Not really sure what the Nid counter would be but I’d want to be running 2 Exocrines and 6 Hive Guard at least.

What a shame guys… I follow your content very closely and love what you put out, but that game was a little disgusting lol… I think in todays Marines meta, a chapter master and Lieut is way way way too much for anything slightly resembling balance… My precious Nids are in a tough spot anyway, but that hurt to watch… I also think the Nids list wasn’t really catering for a Marines match up which kind of compounded things a little… Couple all that with no terrain to make use of and it’s the perfect anti-horde storm… Felt a little… Read more »

Ahhhh it sucks seeing your fave army get slapped across the field, but alas that is 40k and sometimes it just happens like that. There are a few tyranid lists which can hold their own in an objective based game and I would love to see a list used that is of that making. Big blobs of our troops currently don’t work, instead using multiple smaller units (eg 10x horms and terms) seems better. If any of you read this, there is a list that was used at a Tokyo tournament that I would recommend you look at. It came… Read more »

I was super pumped to see the Black Templar rules on show but it was a shame the game was over before it started, didnt really get to see any of the flavour of the BT. Those re rolls and the castle are just a lot to overcome. Id love to see a game where you forgoe the castle and chapter master and just go full templar. There are some really interesting BT specific startagems that would be worth looking in to. Adavance and charge, stopping the opponent from falling back etc. Theres a great relic (Crusader Helm) that puts… Read more »

Glad to see the templars, have not watched a match with them yet. The Arachnacyte gland removing the plus 1 to charge is annoying, I agree Beard. Love watching you guys play together but this made me sad. My bugs got torn to pieces before they could even do anything 🙁 I swear our whole army needs new data sheets at this point save 2 ot 3 units. The hive tyrant has less attacks than a single outrider bike, same for the Trygon, what gives… I mean maybe if our points didn’t go up at all and instead went down… Read more »

While I’m not such a believer in the “marine-pocalypse as some people, this was a bit overly savage. I think taking a short-range/melee horde list against an army with a huge amount of blast is just asking to get wiped, and while I know you dont go out of your way to counter each other, this one felt like it was over in the list breakdown. Ignoring all that though I’d say the tyranids still arent in a position where hordes are viable, and I’d like to maybe see some warrior blobs and big monsters instead, I feel if your… Read more »

The only thing about the Chapter Master strategem that I don’t like is that I can only use it once on a captain. Marines are awesome even without a CM and so to reflect that, I should be allowed to give all my Sergeants a 6 inch reroll aura for 1 CP each.

Lovely terrain.
Hindsight being what it is, I think taking both a repulsed and the chapter master was a really unfortunate choice, think could have been an interesting game without those.
Loved the content as ever though!

Finally worked my way through the whole tyranocide. Seems like Bone is ashamed of his victory at the end and I assume neither of them enjoyed the game much. Losing 10 minutes into the game causes frustration and you lose your investment into the game and the viewer immersion is also gone.

Also the big terrain piece and general terrain layout is very suboptimal for the small map size. It creates a bottleneck from which only the space marines benefit. 300 anyone?

R.I.P.

Looking forward to the next Batrep. Presentation and production quality were top notch as always guys.

First time ever I stopped watching one of your Batreps in Turn 1. Tyranids running into no mans land without a single piece of cover, facing a space marine gunline? So sad after all that thinking going into Beard’s list.

Honestly, I do find using PL instead of points really does balance out the game in a number of ways. The main reason is that the PL cost is not affected by the wargear option so you can finally take 20 genestealers with toxin sacs and extended carapace so those can see the light of day. The only options that change the PL cost are wings. But seriously 20 stealers with extended, toxin sacs, jormungandr cover save, and dynamic camo is a 3+ sv with a 5+inv that ignores AP -1 and -2. That eats up so much shooting in… Read more »

Us white scars players are VERY excited for the bikes. Used them in 2 games so far, awesome on the charge, and with the cheeky encirclement strategem, awesome to get them behind enemy lines, and the Fierce Rivalries strat makes them reliable on that charge.

I hope this marks the beginning of more Black Templar reports, and thought some useful stuff may assist, (particularly if Bone come up against a Spider List…) First, while the Vox Espiritum is decent, for a Black Templars army it’s slightly redundant. You’re better off using the Crusader’s Helm relic. This relic also gives an extra 3″ aura bubble to the holder, but in addition it allows you to select one unit each round within 6″ of the wearer, and place them into the Assault Doctrine. So, in theory every turn you have at least one unit in the Assault… Read more »

@Bone: Breviary (italian: breviario, I think it came from latin “brevis” meaning small) is a pocket sized book filled with prayers, I think used mostly by the Catholic Church since I’ve heard that name since I was a child. About the game: nice to see the new units! And while I’m mostly with you in the assesment of the power of the Chapter Master (but then again, I think there are many things in the game that sound bonkers when you play against them, and not only on the marine side), I think the game went downhill very quickly for… Read more »

41:30 shows exactly what is wrong with 9th edition and the primaris madness. First Turn Nonsense 30% of the opposing army wiped out in the first shooting phase. Game over. Do you guys even enjoy such games? For me they are neither exciting nor fun to watch, sadly. As a casual player it’s not about winning. It’s about having at least a chance of winning. There is a difference between a competition and a struggle and GW certainly missed the point with primaris. Primaris aren’t fun to play against, therefore the players either get used to losing, turn away from the… Read more »

Alright, well, I need to ask this, it is important. Whose idea was this to actually put a “boink” sound effect in the background around 25:26 when Swarmlord “surged forward” ? Give this man 500 more points to play with in the next battle report. Nice touch, almost had me spat my coffee ! The battle report was fun to watch for the banter and that specific thing Impulsor blowing up , but GW went over the top in term of rules for the Primaris Marines. A bit too many overtuned & underpriced units and stratagems for my taste at… Read more »

I guess there’s so much work goes into creating a show before you even start rolling dice that you can’t afford to re-rack with a different army if turn 1 is a total one sided bludgeoning? While we get used to 9th, our group has been playing out turn 1 and 2 by which point it’s obvious who’s won about 85% of the time. If it’s a paddling, we start over, with a different mission or lists. I appreciate that you can’t do that and maintain your schedule and excellent quality. It’s such a shame that Space Marines have been… Read more »

This game illustrates why every single one of the lists I create, at their core, are designed to kill Marines.

I despise how oppressive they are. I have a custom chapter of Salamanders Successor and I am very proud of them. But currently I am so disgusted by their rules I can’t bring myself to put them on the table.

I really despise Marines.

I don’t know how to feel about this game to be honest. The banter and fun between Bone and Beard is always fun and interesting, but marines are just so damn oppressive. I still don’t know how on earth that sm codex escaped playtesting in the form it did, and I think October can’t come fast enough just to rein that dex in a bit (hopefully). I dig the terrain piece, but I think playing lengthways on it was a bad decision, if narrative, because it funneled them nids pretty directly. Having said that; if the situation was reversed, I… Read more »

Guys I’ve been wanting to ask this for ages! Do you still have your older Tyranid models? From memory you used to have the flyers, carnifexes, venomthropes, mawlocs etc etc. I get that not much of the nid codex is that great at the moment but was just wondering!

I get that space marines are powerful and that there are the moments of self referential “Well that is just marines” stapled into every episode that they just slaughter, but can you just make lists that would be more balanced. Stop using chapter master, stop going to obvious meta stuff. Chef made a really fluffy marine army in his match against Lawrence that was really great. Lawrence massacred it with a list optimized for fighting meta space marines so there’s that give and take. All I am saying is that if Chef can make a fun fluffy and really balanced… Read more »

I love you guys but I feel like you kinda dropped the ball with the terrain with this one. As one sided as the game was, you could’ve given the nids a hand by not having that huge no mans land infront of the SM castle. Poor Beard was just running at a wall of guns. As a narrative game it would’ve been better but then maybe give the nids multiple waves of reinforcements.

Taylor Allison

Entertaining as always guys but there was so much here that was emblematic of the issues in the game. I’ll sum it up with this — the fact that you guys basically took Indomitus and supplemented the list with some vehicles (pretty reasonable, fluffy thing to do from a SM player perspective) and put it up against a pretty reasonable, fluffy Nids list and this is the outcome says a lot about the state of the game. Imagine being a kid who plays Nids and getting into the game with your mate who plays Marines. How long are you going… Read more »

Oh boy, just got to the lists but I’ve got a bad feeling about this …?? – Beard as a fellow lover of running 2 acid-fexes, I would highly recommend dermic symbiosis on both (since u can – diff from relics or signature systems) – not only is the 5++ obv useful but the doubling of the wounds bracket to keep both keep them mobile and keep the strength of the acid spray up is huge (also the maths of doubling wounds on a 14w model is very generous as they can then take 11 wounds before being degraded at… Read more »

I’m commenting after watching the first Space Marine turn. Starting the Marines off in an enormous fortress where the nids have to funnel into the gate was a huge advantage! It was a firing zone where all the marines can concentrate all of their guns on any approaching unit, who must cross a cover empty kill zone. I suppose its a realistic nid vs marine battle, but I would really appreciate some more balanced terrain placement that allows for more nuanced strategies to take place. Perhaps placing the gate so it would have covered some central objectives but not being… Read more »

What do you guys think about not using the chapter master strat, at least until the new codex is out, with whatever balances they have planned? I like seeing the obsidian dragons on the channel and they may be a little less oppressive without full rerolls

You can’t call this black templars, didn’t use any of the cool litanies, relics, grandmarshal helbrect (the actual chapter master which would have saved 3cp) or the emperors champion for shame. Great report poor nids.

Nice to see the new Invictus models in action. A shame the bikes couldn’t do much else this match. And the Imulsor explosion was tremendously entertaining! The concept of the Tyranid list was strong but the execution was a bit off, I think. I was expecting to see the use of Onslaught on that left-hand unit of Hormagaunts prior to using Hive Commander so they could advance and charge. Granted, Bone could’ve used the stratagem to cancel Onslaught but had it gone off the Hormagaunts could’ve gotten a really good chance of charging the front line Turn 1 and caused… Read more »

Good report, but I believe Beard made a mistake with the Trygon.
He rolled 8 attacks against the tank, but a Trygon Prime has 6 attacks, and Scything Talons grant +1 attack if you have more than one, not +1 for each additional pair beyond the first. So it should have been 7 attacks. Unfortunately, the third pair the Tyrgon Prime is equipped with do literally nothing.
The tank might have survived, compounding Beards misfortune!
