Very happy that when I play Dark Eldar the Incubi and Drazhar are actually worth taking. I still took them before this but that was the fluff bunny in me.

Kinda disappointed with the book. I think i, and others, hoped it’d be a bit more substantial in terms of contents. It might have been overly optimistic to think Craftworlds etc would get “super doctrines” outside of a new codex/dedicated suppliment, but, i find the lack of additional WL traits and relics a bit sad. In regards to Hawks, one thing i’m interested in testing is their ability to be a fantastic screening unit. The exarch power to reduce the charge range after firing overwatch could be incredibly strong – however we now have the added problem of “can it… Read more »

i think this is going to be the era of bespoke detachment craftworlds as there is nothing stopping you from making for example a “Shurikane” battalion with Children of Morei-heg and either Martial Citizenry / Hail of doom on 3×20 guardians and then maybe a “psyc” Supreme command detachment with Children of Prophecy and Expert Crafters 3 farseers and so on

I’m looking forward to putting together my own traits for Craftworld Arithym. Aspect Warriors (except the Banshees which makes NO sense!) seem to have gotten a most welcome shot in the army with the Exarch abilities.

Cannot come soon enough.

i feel that the way GW approach Chapter Approved needs to change. Nothing wrong with how they did it at the start of 8th, but now with the speed they are releasing stuff and the vast changes being introduced the delay in it going to print and being released mean it doesnt keep up with the newest changes and meta, which is how they sold it. they should just do free pdf releases with point changes to keep it all up-to-date, and still release the books with new missions etc.

A post-watch shout-out to the untouched/likely unconsidered Shadow Spectres and still languishing Corsairs.
I know, salt, my but I’m not ready to give up that bitterness just yet.

I’m pretty sure they gave the wraith knight the “wraith construct” key word in an errata.

I feel we’re back to the SM codex reveiw all over again. Chef keeps interrupting and sidelineing the conversation. I very rarely if ever turn off episodes but I had to take breaks on this one from the sheer frustration. If someone is talking, on a show your making that is in the middle of making a point. You DO NOT interrupt them. Is it really so hard to pace yourself?

The whych for the +1 to wound could be handy on a flyer detachment, dissies wounding vehicles on 4+

As a big Asuryani fan I find the whole supplement pretty underwhelming. As mentioned below, Jain Zar not having an invuln still makes her pretty weak even though she is a legendary Phoenix Lord. The horde blender rule seems nice, but at the same time hard to take real advantage off (with good positioning by your opponent, she will not gain that many extra attacks). I agree that its good that space marines have gotten a much needed upgrade to bring them in line with the fluff but for some reason people seem to forget eldar have, fluffwise, some pretty… Read more »

a little bit dissapointed that all the other phoenix lords didnt get new rules, they are so weak and cost too much for what they do, in fact they do nothing cause they are so bad but yeah. Maybe we will see changes in the future.

Agree Vigilus seemed to make it pretty clear that campaign supplements are kind of a testbed for future codex releases.

When discussing Incubi, you guys should also think about the fact that Drazhar, if he’s your Warlord will be rerolling to wound for his own attacks due to Eternal Hatred. There’s also the Onslaught Stratagem: 1CP to make 1 Incubi unit’s hit rolls of 6 count as 2 hits instead of 1. Using this and Drazhar standing nearby, you can definitely wreck that Knight, Lawrence. 🙂 30 attacks, hitting on 2’s for Round 3 Power from Pain (or the Stratagem to accelrate it for 1 unit) yields 30 hits because the 5 misses will be made up for by double… Read more »

Covens: Dark technomancers + Experimental creations + nearby haemonculis = venoms T6, meaning +2 to wound vs T5 or lower @ damage 2.

12 shots, hitting on 3s, wounding on 2s, 2D for 75pts. Vs monsters it’s still wounding on 3s, and 5s vs vehicles at 2D.

Thank you for the review. I’m not fond of Eldari (or any other elfish thing) but you made me consider buying this book all the same. My wallet is already crying.

Thanks for the great review! 🙂

One thing I noticed though is that the skill that gives a Dire Avenger weapons -3 AP – doesn’t it sound like it only affect the weapons that the Exarch is equipped with? Seriously – all DAs getting -3 ap for free is just too good to be true 🙂

Chef, if you’re interested – the pricing for Australia looks to be $390 for the box, $70 for the book ?

The customization is great, one big fear though. By releasing customizable craftworlds without giving an incentive (like doctrines) to play true mono faction, you’ve just incentivized an incredibly convoluted eldar meta that rewards bringing three different detachments with highly specialized bonuses for the units in it. No one wants this, but with the power of SM currently and likely no other changes to eldar in the near future, it’s going to happen just because players will want to match the new SM arms war. Get ready for little plug and play detachments of shuriken boosted guardian blobs, reroll boosted 3×3… Read more »

As for models history 🙂 Banshees, Scorpions, Reapers, Hawks, Dragons and Avengers were all redone last time together with the 4th edition codex, which was roughly 2007 – so our newest Aspect warrior sculpts are ~12 years old 🙂 Spiders and Shining Spears were never redone. Spiders already were around at least in 1999, Spears appeared in 2000-2001. Now that I’m thinking of it, the history of Aspect warrior models does look a bit odd. Using Banshees as an example – during the period 1999-2007 they were re-sculpted twice (and I think the same is true at least for Reapers,… Read more »

Came for a book review, stayed for the tantalizing Tantalus tease. Can’t wait to see that. On the whole “missed opportunities” line of thinking, I do sometimes think that there might be a shortage of rules writers on the GW team who “get” Xenos in general. The Marines books are brilliant because they just feel like Astartes all the way through, while Aeldari or Drukhari or Tyranids tend to be hit or miss. As Lawrence pointed out, why would anyone who understood Kabals give them close combat based faction traits? On Banshees: my wife tends to use a unit of… Read more »

I’ll stick with Ulthwé for now, I don’t think it´s worth loosing Eldrad over any of these pairs 🙁

One thought for the voxcast style videos – have your considered/ played with more of a news desk type setup – e.g sit around the end of a table 90 degrees from each other, turn towards the camera for the introductory/ summary parts and then be able to turn towards each other and talk a bit more naturally with that sweet sweet multi cam setup? I found the zoom in shots with the person not the focus soothing on the edge of the frame with a bit of their arm missing a bit awkward.

The new incubi and banshee models are pretty uninspired. If you compare them to the effort that goes into all the new space marines. Nice to see the new models though. Lets hope the whole range finally get a plastic kit.

If they gave Banshees 4 attacks they’d be fine. As they stand now, one of those most feared assault units lore wise have 30%-ish chance to kill 1 Guardsman. Although I love 8th, I wish GW would use stats more then unit rules, points adjustments and stratagems to fix units. I don’t want Banshees being fixed by more points drops. I want my Banshees the be an expensive Elite assault unit. They should delete units in combat.

Sorry, off topic: Spyder and/or maybe TTT, when you get to it can we get a channel update with what’s in the works and whats on hold due to reasons? i.e. Cast of Players is in writing stage, it will not begin filming until X and episodes will begin being released Y …and that could be January or February? Also to repeat a request I made back in late 2017 can we get a Roundtable History of TTT Holiday Special? Nothing too personal but: How did you all meet? Begin Tournaments? What are your backgrounds in the hobby and do… Read more »

So regarding the Dire Avenger thingy you read, it clearly says “this Exarch is equipped with” so it only affects the Exarch? I don’t think they will give -3 to the entire squad, it’s just for the two Catapults you can give him. It’s not bad, but it’s not affecting the entire unit, or am I missing something?

I’m really looking forward to trying these custom traits out, most of the Craftworld ones seem pretty rubbish (+2 to advance rolls when Kabals get a flat +3 to their move seem needlessly worse) but there’s a few that really stand out for me, I just need some more Dire Avengers. Kabal’s defenitely seem to have gotten the short end of the stick with the traits, +3 move and +1D on 6’s seems like a decent idea but Flayed Skull still seems better for the same play style. Cults and Covens have got some very interesting choices though and I’m… Read more »

I love you guys, and all, but you’re putting too much faith on GW in regards to xenos… I would be absolutely amazed if they release the entire Aspect Warrior branch within a year, it will simply, not happen.

And we will not get doctrines, absolutely sure about that, we are xenos! We don’t get new toys, nor new rules, unless there’s 50 million SM releases in between.

Chef, @42:00: there is already such a rule in the rulebook, see the rulebook FAQ, second page, as addition to page 215, Page 215 – Sudden Death Change point 2 to read: ‘If at the end of any turn after the first battle round, one player has no models on the battlefield, the game ends immediately and their opponent automatically wins a crushing victory. When determining if a player has any units on the battlefield, do not include any units with the Flyer Battlefield Role – these units cannot operate within a combat airspace indefinitely and they cannot hold territory… Read more »

Possibly a stupid question; but do Avatar’s get the option of getting Exarch powers again?
Edit: Because if Howling Banshee’s decapitating strike was like the Striking Scorpion’s power you were talking about, why would you take Striking Scorpions? Howling Banshee’s I assume would still prevent overwatches?

Aspect warriors were already updated when I began playing in 5th edition again. But Eldar were still on their 4th edition codex. If I recall correctly they never got a 5th edition book.
Pervious sculpts were from 2nd edition I believe. As I had the Swooping hawks from that line.
