Okay so I got the book myself and I have some thoughts I wanted to share after also having played a friendly game against a Dark Angel’s army with their new rules. The Banner of Refining Flame removes Rites of Banishment, so no 24″ super smite for us, sad day. Same goes for Crowe and Purifiers, they also do not have the Rites of Banishment ability, sad days indeed. Now I wanted to take advantage of the Tide of Escalation. To this end MSU squads were the way to go… and I also wanted to try Terminators because I so… Read more »
The Dire Avengers Incident! We all remember where we were and what we did that day.
Me: Painting Dire Avengers to fill out units and getting really excited for a moment.
Everyone forgets that the sisters of battle codex came out after Space Marines. While a good codex, I don’t think it rises to the same level as Space Marines.
re: Deathwing….
The ability for +1 T was moved in effect to a stratagem called “Fortress of Shields” that gives -1 to wound in the fight phase (for DW units with at least 3 shields). Combos nicely with the other survival additions to make DW 2+/3++/5+++ (mortal wounds only), -1 to wound. Could cast Aversion on the target fighting them to make them -1 to hit too 🙂
Thanks guys. Nice roundup. Looking forward to the bat rep. Really happy for the GK they really needed something. Everyones a gk fan deep inside ?
According to the Codex and my memory Purifiers, Crowe and a model with the banner of refining flame don’t have rites of banishment. So their smite won’t be Improved by said tide. Still they already have the potenial for higher dmg smites, so It’s fair.
Edit – Saw other people posted this, oh well!
A really interesting combo (to me at least) would be to drop pod in a devastator squad with 4 heavy flamers that are now 14 inch range and AP -2 in devastator doctrine.
Gotta love all the new Ravenwing warlord traits. Just for clarification, speed of the raven does let you advance and charge as well as shoot. Easily the best 1 cp you can spend in the codex. You can literally advance your 90 pt nephilim up the field, spend one command point and shoot as normal while still having your 4+ invul for jink.
Did i miss the Blood of Baal vox, or are the bugs just not important? 🙁
Well, new Grey Knights rules let you stack bonus to psychic tests up to +4. Inner flame with +6 inch range buff from strat looks pretty tasty especially combined with 3 inch deepstrike strat. Librarian with relic, inner flame and vortex can be quite good at sniping characters.
Loving the fact that Rubricae and SOT’s got so many buffs that make them more worth playing. There may be a bunch of soup detachments still out there, but at least those Supreme Commands might have some SOT’s or some of them might end up being Battalions with Rubricae.
Couple things on the ravenwing. I’m super excited about the talonmaster relic that makes him hit like Sammy and gives him even more range. I’m not entirely sure I agree with the thought that you want to turn one charge with them using the outrider WT. They are a shooting asset and generally not great in CC against things that are. They wanna be plasma’ing knights and big scary multiwound units not charging them imho. Competitive lists can and do tend to have screens that you would have to shoot away to charge the scary thing you’d probably rather shoot… Read more »
Great Video as always. A little move I think people are sleeping on with the grey knights… Their tides don’t change at the start of the tern like marine doctrines You can start a turn in Tide Of Escalation, go nuts with your two damage smites, then as your last power, switch to Tide Of Convergence and blast away with the psibolt combos.
I’m really enjoying the coverage you are giving to the latest book. The battle report turned out to be close (a little nerve-wracking towards the end!) and the voxcast is full of goodness. 🙂
One small suggestion, if I may….. I know that I should be interested in everything you have to say, but life is short. Timestamps in the notes would be a great help to me (and maybe others like me), something like this:
00:00 Dark Angels
34:21 Grey Knights
1:16:49 Thousand Sons
Thank you for the interesting analysis! I like the changes to all those armies, especially the Grey Knights, and I think you undervalue a little what the TS received… they already have ap -2 bolters and powerful psykers. I don’t know if I’m the only one that feels that way, but it seems to me that the increase of power in all the armies they are working on is directed to be more killy…. if you don’t get first turn you are almost always in a dreadful position, cause by time you can roll some dices you’ll probably have only… Read more »
8:00 GW just posted that Lazarus is 105 points.
a nice thing about the tide of shadows you don’t need to use prepared positions, save those CP for later, very nice.
Grey Knights Ancient with banner has a 6″ super smite. +6″ for strat, x2 for a Brother Captain, basically just a backline super smite dealer, extremely good in my opinion.
I am happy for the long-neglected armies to get some love.
Overall, however, I think it remains a bad and unsustainable trend that (to “balance”) armies, everything just continues to become more and more killy and lethal, especially on those first CP-fueled turns. Whether it’s pre-game Ravenwing moves and near-guaranteed Deathwing charges or “turn-stormbolters-into-burst-cannons” Grey Knights after a 20 MW psychic phase (or Imperial Fist Marines or Eldar with Salamanders re-rolls, etc..), it ultimately just shifts the game further and further into a who-has-the-first-turn-game, the more armies can deal those incredibly reliable and devastating blows.
Do the relic banners for the Deathwing and Ravenwing Ancients replace the +1 attack they come with or is it in addition?
I don’t think the new Dark Angel is the first time you get a kit building both a generic character and a special character.
Swarmlord and Old One Eye are both build from the generic Hive Tyrant / Carnifex kits. The named Ogryn Nork Neddok is build from the general Ogryn kit. There was a time a decade or so ago, when that approach was quite popular, I think.
Just something to add about the fourth grey knight tide, if it only effects rites of banishment then it doesn’t effect purifiers, Crowe or the banner as they dont have that specific rule
The 3″ Deep Strike does it stop heroic intervention?
Ok so after seeing the Thousand Sons review I can see that it will be pretty much the same Supreme Command with the cult of magic, you can have Ahriman with +1 to cast, a DPoT with High Magister for another +1 and another DPoT with the cult of magic trait for +1 to all the mortal wounds he does and the new relic that gives +1 to cast. As far as I can think this is the only things that can be seen competitively for TS? Other that that cult of duplicity is strong as moving staff around if… Read more »
Absolutely fantastic upgrades for the Dark Angels. My only worry is that while there’s a lot of cool new stratagems to really buff all the wings, it sounds like they’re going to be even more CP hungry than before. Especially if you consider using the Vigilus detachment on top of everything.
It would’ve been nice to have an option to make regular terminators/bikers troops to help fill battalions more effectively. Still, this is nit-picky. I’ll gladly take what they’ve given us. Can’t wait to see what you guys try out.
Honestly really annoyed with how Dark Angels have been approached in 8th. With their army-rules making them a stand and shoot army. It really doesn’t feel right for them in terms of their background, and doesn’t really mesh with their iconic units. Neither Deathwing or Ravenwing want to stay still, and in general don’t want to stay at long range. (Dark Angels were my first army, so I’m obviously very salty GW have taken them in a direction I don’t like. My boyz been done dirty)
Deathwing knights can get -1 to wound with a strat already. Now can be T5 and -1 to wound
Space marines and chaos space marines of varying flavors have been the worse performing factions except for the support factions and Tyranids. Which is why it’s so shocking that Tyranids did so poorly out of the PA update.
first ^^
only 6 pages for the TS in comparison to 33 for the Dark Angel is hard
