Really excited to play this! Our group picked up the terrain recently. Just so confused on what’s going on with the Khaines arrow detachment… You can’t take dark reapers… But can take maugen ra.. if you take dark reapers which you can’t take.. I just hope they add dark reapers rather than kick out maugen ra as a typo or something silly like that.

Probably should be noted that in addition to the Boarding Actions book and the core rules one needs the codex for the army one is playing. The Boarding Actions book only has the modifications to the rules for each unit, it does not have the actual rules themselves.

You convinced me guys, I’ll find someone else interested and buy the set! And who knows, in the future different sets for different ships? One can only dream of it…

Absolutely excellent. Really excited to give boarding actions a go. Got the book ordered and definitely thinking about getting the terrain

Tabletop tacticians! Excellent review thank you, but which faction have you had the most fun playing as in boarding actions?

ScoundrelStudios (Matt Purdie)

Don’t know if you saw it Bard, but you would have loved our massive multiplayer boarding action of an Ultramarines Strike Cruiser using 7 (!) connected Boarding Action sets to make up different areas of the ship. It was 8 players per side, allied Chaos vs allied Imperials. We featured as the Satellite Uplink club in White Dwarf 499, where I describe it in more detail. Suffice to say with the new book inbound I’m cooking up more boarding actions fun for the players at Redditch Tabletop Gamers…

I wonder if they’ll decide to run boarding action events at the lodge. Buying and painting more terrain might be an issue of course.

For anyone struggling with the terrain. Out of the box it is…as impossible to assemble correctly as the Bards captains invulnerable saving throws in the most recent boarding actions game. I took a dremel tool, with the circular sandpaper attachement, and shaved down every connecting point. Afterwards, I did the same for the tops, where the single cube piece connects, and shaved down each side. After doing this every piece slots perfectly in and out with no issues. Get some eye pro, a dremel, and shave the ends / tops and get it primed and painted after.

Ahh this might actually reignite my passion for 40k. It’s been a bit of a lull since 9th ed dropped really. But this looks awesome fun.

Beard you need to run a Boarding Action narrative campaign where Grom and his battle pack get trapped aboard a space hulk and sacrifice themselves by staying aboard it as it drops into the warp thus condemning them to Boarding Action games forever.

I think the closest I’ve ever seen James come to letting his super positive and fun mask slip is when he’s directly confronting and refuting peoples’ complaints about Boarding Actions lol. And I wholeheartedly agree! But it’s just funny to see the most upbeat member of the team edging so close to the bottomless abyss of rage having to even discuss whether hundreds of hours of enjoyment are worth the cost of half a PS5.

I think the point that *because* the lists are restricted, they can be thematic but balanced really highlights what feels a bit meh about the main 40K game atm imo – getting rid of force organisation and making it a free for all, so balance, themes, it’s all a bit all over the place.

Loved Boarding actions, and looking forward to this book, I think.. How much *new* stuff do you get on top of all the Arks of Omen books? Are there enough rules updates to warrant getting this ‘compendium’ (are the detachments ‘all new’?), or is it the same stuff, just all in one place?

My favorite way to play this game is to create custom narrative campaigns. I’ve created several custom missions and my wife purchased and I painted a large mdf zone mortalis equivalent set (it was a fantastic Christmas gift from her). I’m going to have to pick up this book so I have some ready made missions for my next campaign. I’ve been wanting to do more interior missions to use my terrain.

AoS fire & jade book for spearhead is the same way. Somewhere one GW design team is on fire, somewhere else is the design team that thought imperial agents was a good idea

Honestly, my main complaint isn’t the cost of the trade, it’s how much of a pain in the butt it is to put the walls together and take them apart. They just needed to make all the connections a tiny bit looser.

Two questions: do we think BA will make battleline units viable? (Love me some intercessors.) And what do we think the odds are of getting new detachments down the road?

I am thrilled I have been slowly painting up the terrain for about 8 months and I am so happy that this book is coming out

Anyone from around Bristol area want to play boarding actions? I can’t find anyone, but I’m happy to bring terrain to a day event 👀👀

The new Boarding Actions book really feels like a 10.5 Edition. It builds on what we already have, streamlines and focusses it, and gives us an even easier way to pick up and play the game. I’m already looking forward to more Boarding Actions, and hopefully more of the TT team being involved (I really want to see Spider and Chef trying to play a super-competitive boarding actions game just for the laughs).

I have absolutely no interest in playing Tau in 40k, but I am EXTREMELY excited to get a Kroot Boarding Action force ready to play with.
Now I just need to go out and buy the Tau codex (and some cool Kroot minis). See what you did there, GW?

Can’t wait for all the Boarding Action content on here!

Great review! Only thing I might object to is the “all you need in one book”. Almost true, but you have to have the data cards. If you, like me, use official sources that means index cards (downloadable), buying codex data cards (for factions with codex) or buying the codex if I want to use data cards in the app. But it’s much better with everything else collected in one tome. Not a dealbreaker, but adds another investment hurdle for me. If I want to do a new specific faction boarding patrol (new faction for me), that has had a… Read more »

I love boarding action, absolutely love it.
Hopefully this book is GW retesting customer reception to boarding action and it’s well enough received that it gets more content, and hopefully it’s GW testing the reception of “compendium” content. You shouldn’t need to test “do people like getting everything they need in a single book”, because yes… people like getting everything they need in a single book.
Going to have to try and oganize a boarding action group when I’m back in Canada from my visit to the UK. Try and get more players…. on board.

GW did the same thing of “all in one book” in the new AoS Spearhead book. That was nice as well!

There was an interesting comment in this months White Dwarf about how the “increased development time this time around” meant they could do loads of testing and balancing. When I asked someone I know that works at GW, if the original Boarding Actions was rushed out to fit with the Kill Team releases, they just laughed and reminded me that the rules team were writing indexes for every faction for a new edition at the time. It feels like this version of BA has really benefitted from the extra love and attention that they seem to have been able to… Read more »

I’m a huge fan of Boarding Actions, as a dad that has many other obligations time for the hobby is definitely finite. So being able to still get games in almost weekly that only take maybe an hour is fantastic. I really hope that when the Emperor’s Children (or any other new factions) release that they will release their BA data sheets as a pdf. Also the cost can be much for the terrain but if you or a friend has a 3D printer, you can find plenty of stls that can help offset the costs. Great episode and I’m… Read more »

Great review.
I’ve got all the books, terrain and White Dwarf content.
But this book is great for all the new content: updated rules, detachments,…

Looking forward to the battle reports.

My compendium is pre ordered and my loins are girded in anticipation, I can’t wait to get into this.

It’s already got me thinking about custom mission ideas. My first elevator pitch to my gaming group is a co op game where 2 imperial players fortify an area of the board before having to survive waves of xenos (or daemon) horrors. (Yes, I’ve completely ripped off Aliens)

I’m still to play Boarding Action but I’ve been really desperate to play it for a while. Shorter games are so much more palatable when you don’t get as much hobby time, so I’m really happy this has been received so well. Feels like the perfect addition to the game, pre-ordered once I finished watching 😁

Can’t wait to get my copy of the rules and finally play some Boarding Actions!

Do any of the Custodes detachments allow for the Forgeworld infantry to be taken? Because I’d love to take some big, stompy Aquilon terminators!

Is the book actually all you need to play? Or do you still need a codex and main rule book?

I really like boarding actions so g,ad it has legs in 10th – any idea if any of the custom scenarios they did in white dwarf made it into the book or if they are backwards compatible? They had some fun custom ones with their own templates you could punch out

Just want to say, I have pre ordered the Agents Codex, will be getting the Combat Patrol of the Agents as I have a large GK army already

I think Agents can be an awesome Boarding Action force to play with

Is there information for that?

I only have half of the terrain necessary to play boarding actions, as I bought the Shadowvaults Kill Team box. Does anyone know of an easy/cost-efficient way of making up the other half?

So happy, looks great. In celebration of its release I’m building a new boarding action army of nautical death guard, to join my other four boarding action armies. Instead of a ship, they will be fighting on a massive oil rig/refinery on a water planet.

Still no comment that a year ago they promised an update for the 5 arks of omen books we bought. But hey, why give people free update when you can repackage and sell something again! This is the only thing I am really salty about, other than that BA looks amazing! Definitely will give it another shot
