It’s time for a Good, Bad and Ugly revisit, as Bone and Chef comb through the latest update to the Sons of Russ!

Unfortunately we received the books late on Friday this week from Games Workshop, making filming a Preview Battle Report impossible. We will film some games next week instead.  🕷 Want even more Tabletop Tactics videos? Sign up for On Demand here: https://tabletoptactics.tv/membership-account/membership-levels/

Just the fact that Logan Grimnar is not an absolute monster and auto take and looses to new juicy primaris characters makes me salt. I mean, he is the f****** Chapter master for Christ sake, that one that just punch Grey Knights for breakfast when he feels like it. Chapter masters should be what they are, table top monsters, at least stand above the rest of their chapter characters. Same issue with Azrael.

Long time space wolf player here, and the new supplement seems good to me, cheers for the rundown. Wulfen have been nerfed? Good. As you’ve pointed out they can still have a role, but its going to be nice seeing not everyone just running big units of TH/SS and having to rely on them to win the game EVERY game. Blood claws are very viable again. Grey Hunters are in a very very good position as far as im concerned. Less range than intercessors, but with 2 wounds, dual special weapons, chainswords, can ride in rhinos, and have a WGPL… Read more »

December, I’d like to see Death Guard VS Space Wolves. NEW CODEXES

to make some of the more flavourful space wolf characters a bit more playable they should look back towards so of the glorious phil kelly 5th edition wolfy mcwolf wolf rules. – eg logan on chariot should make wolf guard obsec like he used to make them troops (not too broken as they can get it via rites of war anyway but fits his fluff more). Additionally while he is on sled he should be 9 wounds max 3 damage per phase like alot of other big beat stick characters, these aspects combined would make his somewhat more playable. –… Read more »

I believe the official name for the school of punching would be “The School of Hard Knocks”…

While it doesn’t always translate to making every unit *good*, I do like how they’re really defining the units by the lore more.

So I’ve had a thought for a while, and y’all touch on it in this vid when you reference big blobs of bloodclaws. So come, join me on a tangent! (Lookin at you, tangent-lord Chef XD) I think that the fear going around about blast weapons’ impact on big infantry blobs is an over-reaction. So they now get a minimum of 3 hits, is that really a big deal? Does a blob of 30 boys care if that frag missile rolls a 2 for its number of shots and so gets a bonus shot? As you said, 2 wound marine… Read more »

Blood Angels Death Company better be able to be taken as a horde unit (>10) if Blood Claws still can…!

Kitted up Stormfang for 300pts I’d like that.
But also I love the idea of a 3/4 wave army, in Thunder Wolves, Termis, minimal Troops for obsec and Dreadnoughts bringing up the rear.

Two things:
Armorium cherub with long fangs 🤦‍♂️ (for the space wolves that is a joke!)
Wolf Priest healing balm strategy 🤦‍♂️

Everything else sounds good. I do think the wulfen needed a nerf but maybe a little bit too far on that one.

200% there with ya about the “bleh” wolf fluff Chef. At some point they got so ridiculous with the naming conventions they kind of become ‘eye-rolling’ to read about. Maybe not much of a comparison since most other chapters don’t have their own unique units, but for instance Raven Guard don’t name literally *EVERY* vehicle, character, and rule after ravens.(do they? I hope not) xD
PS. don’t fret Bone, Cadmus Bane is like in the top 99th percentile for creative space wolf names! Beating out all the variations of ‘Canis Wolfborn’ lol

Very nice breakdown as always. Let me share my comments as a dedicated SW player and that had lots of fun with Wulfen specially. Wulfen are indeed too much or a nerf, they went straight up bad for me. Changes to Thunder Hammers and Storm Shield. Their rules, so many nerfs. They are just not enough. And I would say their positive rule is also not great. Wulfen used to be able to delete things in combat in 1 turn easily, they didn’t need or want prolonged combat, except when wrapping up. They would hit something delete it, and move… Read more »

Hey, at least if you’re not running up against an army with Psykers, your Hounds of Morkai can just be used as reivers with outflank instead of deep strike

I have played SW since they became a legal army. This supplement is mediocre at best. The Wulfen have been nerfed to not playable even in friendly games. The Wolf Priest was already nerfed with the aura to litany change now it can’t even heal unless you use CP which means you have no reason to ever bring more than one of them. The good strats we had from PA are now gone. The Wulfen Stone has been nerfed. The chapter tactic of HI for all units is worthless. Why? Because this isn’t 8th edition. No one cares if you… Read more »

Would love to see some viking-esque Bladeguard with axes, riding about with Ragnar in a converted Impulsor. Could call them Huscarls of Russ or something.

Bit off topic but will you guys be doing a Faction Focus on Blood Angels before December? I know Rob only really plays them but would be fun to have maybe Chef and Spider discuss it seeing as he’s working on Flesh Tearers army?

a little bit sad about the fact that GW kinda acts like Guiliman and just makes Space Marines one big army and every “sub-chapter” kinda looses his unique flavour. Also makes me believe there will never be specific Primaris units for these chapters.

Happily surprised to see this out already! A very helpful rundown of the new supplement that provides greater context on what to expect. While I agree with most of the review, I do have to disagree on the assertion that Blood Claws units need to include a Wolf Guard Pack Leader to avoid Headstrong. In truth, you have greater control over that than you might think. As the rule takes effect on your turn, you can control how it works by moving in such a way that you have a second enemy unit farther away at a distance that is… Read more »

I like that the Space Wolves “Bad” is like average ok and equating to some other army’s “Good”.

@Chef: you have WHAT? A life??? Ridicolous! Return to your place near Sanga. With that out of the way… I love the concept of the Morkai guys, but I don’t thik they will ever be viable. Even against factions like Grey Knights, Eldars etc: how much would they struggle to kill a unit of 5? And I don’t think anyone would ever think of bringing more than a unit of them. A pity. Regarding the Wolfen, I get what you mean: they were too much before. But as is too often the case GW seems to be unable to restrain… Read more »

Looking forward to the upcoming game! Cheers for the video 🙂 I mean flyers are just awful with a few exceptions. Between the inherently bad durability, the inability to hide and the overload of weaponry on them and then not even being able to hold objectives theres just no point in them. As they are now they are overpriced glass-cannons that you cant hide efficiently. They neaded to rework hard to hit, so it was something like a 5+ avoid save before the normal save or increase the wounds on them across all the factions. I also think you make… Read more »

Specifically regarding the Hounds of Morkai vs. Thousand Sons. Do Rubrics have the Psyker keyword?

I am not a space wolf player, yet I agree that they seem to have lost a bit of their uniqueness with the wolf priests and their special characters being meh. The wolfen took so many hits with the nerf hammer that now they seem like a 1 and done unit instead of something to really be feared. Advance and charge is on so many other units that taking it from them seems petty. Not giving them a 3rd wound while at the time taking away the shrug was a couple of hits too many. Let them be T5 with… Read more »

Okay, I will probably comment again after finishing the video. But please, PLEASE stop pronouncing Njal as “Ni-jel”, just like in Bjorn, the “j” becomes almost a “y”. So Njal would be “Ne-yal”. Please guys, Nigel Bigtooth is an ork, Njal Stormcaller is a Space Wolf.

the thing with special characters, although they are awesome, is the lack of access to warlord traits and relics. With limited HQ slots, chewing up points and also giving up assassinate, you aren’t going to take more than 3-4 characters. You then need at least 2 for relics and WL traits. From a competitive standpoint, you are going to take max 1 named character.

I read on the community page that Space Wolves can now take successors?

Is this true? You guys didn’t mention either way

Not sure of Mr. The B-Bone’s feelings on this, but I’m thinking its time for a certain Duran Duran song to be sung as he completes a Saga; ala Kissed by a Rose for Harlequins?
Other than that great review guys, I don’t even play the Wolves but still watch all Good, Bad, & Ugly episodes to keep informed on the state of 40K factions as they develop.

This may seem like a weird gripe but why are Marine characters (in general but let’s use Ragnar as an example) just so phenomenally better for there points than anyone else? Ragnar at 140pts is better than every named Necron character barring the King himself. He does more, buffs more, attacks more, survives more. Even when you guys mentioned the generic Captain at 85pts he’s doing more at that cost (with re-rolls and general profile) than an Overlord. Now I do believe the Necron codex is still really, really good and can have solid play into all Marines, but it… Read more »

Agree with the flyers and the healing balms.
The Wulfen are tough. They were certainly too good, but now? Losing so many abilities does hurt and while outflanking is a thing if they fail their charge they’re just sitting there and will get shot to pieces easily. I think giving them the extra wound and keeping advance/charge would have been okay. They would still have lost a lot of their tricks and would still be difficult to deliver. But running across the board would at least have been an option?

Real shame that some chars have not really been improved. To paraphrase Bone: it’s not the points, but more: what’s the point?
Canis losing that BL aura really puts a dent in his usability

Very excited about this aswell!
That 3D6 charge strat seems perfect for outflank aswell to get that 9 inch charge off!
