DOOM Meets 40k: What New Chaos Daemons Could Look Like

Daemons have had a rough time of it over the course of this edition – whilst it may feel like all hope is lost for the faction, could this actually be the precursor to a major refresh? Is it time for the daemons to get a fresh start, have a different 40k aesthetic, and to reach their full potential!? VAAASHTORRR EXCIIITED!

Very fun! I do hope 11th is bikes focused

On the comedic piece, I actually think that Nurgle daemons in that mould do fit into 40k. In Warhawk, Lords of Silence, in fact pretty much any Chris Wraight book that covers Death Guard, there’s frequent instances of Plague Marines merrily stomping around the battlefield, getting confused about what they’re supposed to be doing and interacting with daemons in ways that are framed as at least somewhat comical. I’m thinking in particular of the little Vox daemon in Warhawk. That’s not to say that there is a bit of an aesthetic rift between the current daemon range and the rest… Read more »

My gut feeling for the 11th Edition Box Set is it will be White Scars vs Dark Eldar and the new marine kits will be bike orientated, but I also think a range refresh is on the horizon for Demons and Grey Knights. I really hope they don’t axe the ranges, and I’d be shocked if they did, especially when it looks like they’re adding new Marine supplements if the random Salamander picture on the road map is indicating that. It would be a real shame for them to drop Grey Knights while adding new marines… On the Demon front,… Read more »

Little off topic here but during the discussion Spider mentioned GreyKnights do really well viewer wise when played.

Maybe a topic for behind the scenes but what factions perform the best for you guys viewer wise and which the worst? And why do you think that’s the case?

Cheers.

The only reason I haven’t started a Grey knights army since Codex Daemon Hunters is because the models are awful, I didn’t like the plastic kits when they came out because they just looked like guns and swords tacked on to space marines like some 12 year olds fever dream drawing. Hopefully they take some inspiration from models like the inner circle companions etc and they look incredible.

I hate to poop on the proverbial picnic….
Is it not a Fellgor skull with a bionic eye? There is one in the Killteam box…..

Surely daemons don’t have skulls that would persist after death? I thought daemons returned to the warp when killed?

Can we have Vashtorr book as the Dark Mech Soul Forge book please. Vashtorr has developed all the demon engines, foot soldiers are cyber versions of each God’s current infantry.

Cyber daemons would be cool!. But still love the aesthetic of the current range. I think the bionic eye skull us a beastmen not a Daemon.

I don’t think they *need* a new direction. To me that sounds dangerously like the Coke->New Coke stuff up. Also, there is natural problems with the kits if they can’t bring them into AoS or even, god forbid, Old World. And yes they brought in Soul Grinders, but we have never heard the end of the “that belongs in 40k” retort, despite the fact they are seemingly ok with Skullcannons. I digress. I actually *like* the fish out of water concept for them, that they don’t ‘fit’ into the setting, because to me, that’s kinda the point. They aren’t even… Read more »

What if they did do a vashtor book where they start making him ascend as a demon god. You have exactly what you want where demons that are run from vashtor are more mechanically infused. Give them a more variety of ranged weaponary. Something like gargoyles, dunno maybe mech bats. They definitely have plenty of scope to create something awesome

Is there a reason we can only view it on Youtube and here we have just the link? With Youtube’s constant ads I’m avoiding that site as much as I can…

I agree the new demons should have some 40 K futuristic weaponry attached to them

Branching off a few of the epiphanies that happened here, hopefully this all tracks. 1. Grey Knights are worried about how far off Space Wolves appear to have gone of track. The only 2 entities who could order anything and be listened to was the Emperor or Russ. 2. Where’s Russ? Lost in the warp fighting Chaos. You know who else travels the warp and regularly pops out to do shit? Draigo. What if his latest mission was to find Russ and bring him back? 3. Current lore on Armageddon is massive pitched battle with SWs, Greyknights, black templars trying… Read more »

I have heard that because the sales figures for Daemons are split between AoS and 40k, that Stu Black wanted them to either be 40k exclusive or be rid of them entirely. This rumour leaked and the push back from both sets of fans led to them rejecting that idea.

I would love if they’d manage a good pivot to more SciFi like demons, but I don’t have high hopes up because they play such a key part in the lore. It would be like, there were classic High Elves since the first editions, being central for the Emperor getting his powers or whatnot and now they suddenly have become the Eldar as we know them. The certainly fit better style wise, but the change would feel weird and would require some heavy retcon, which probably would result in a Primaris-like lore disgrace again. If I had to guess, I… Read more »

I feel your pain Lawrence, they did us dirty with our blood angels and now again with this GK combat patrol. Was so excited when I saw it announced, once I opened the page I was hit with a wave of disappointment! 🤣

Sadly my take is quite a negative one. With GW already pushing the separation of game system model ranges (such as the 40K models that are primarily for Heresy being relegated to Legends status) I think Daemons will become AoS only as a full, playable army. CSM and Chaos Knights plus the god-aligned Legions will still be able to take them as allies, but they won’t have their own distinct army rules and codex in 11th edition. And if that is the case, I can see GK going the same way as Deathwatch, with both being absorbed into a broader… Read more »

Just do a couple of legends battles every now and again to show us the happy minis of yore. Gives you happiness and us happiness.

Imo they should introduce the Word Bearers in a Daemonkin style manner as a replacement for Daemons in isolation

I’m gonna be a party pooper on that skull; it’s a beastman. There is a funky looking soul grinder in the Armageddon book that could help the theory though (it’s a big 2 pager with GK and WE duking it out)!

I always imagined that in the outset GW wanted to make demons as much terrifying beings of imagination as much as possible.

As such demons should have terrifying abilities, such as the ability to make your opponent have to sit through 14 hours of French art house films and answer a quiz before making their next move. Or your opponent will have to use a measuring device that only has distances marked in nautical miles to make shooting and movement more challenging.
