Space Marines are the poster boys for Warhammer 40k. However, for what seems like a long time now it feels as if they’ve had major issues; confusing the range, complicating the rules and holding them back from being the great faction we all know and love. But with the latest summer reveals, is the problem finally solved and are Space Marines back on track?!

They should have just said it’s a new armour, not a whole new type of space marine

Personally I prefer Horus Heresy marines. Big, not too big, and still chonky.

While I love the new Vulkan He’stan model as the old fine cast version was not primaris sized, I have to say that the new Raven Guard Model is the coolest model. I also want to shout out the new White Scars model as I love the grav bikes.

Primaris were just true-scale marines that got rid of the strange proportions of the old hero-scale minis.

The entire back story was unnecessary.

As a Crimson Fist player I don’t agree with the “vanilla” chapters losing flavor. Plenty of flavor to be had from detachment and unit choices. My crimson fists lists look nothing like my friends white scars lists and neither of ours look like salamanders lists.

That Ravenguard Chapter Master is favourite by far! I’m planning on kit bashing him into a Night Lords Chaos Lord for sure!

Appreciate the content!

As a newer player i like primaris over firstborn, the larger size makes it nicer to kitbash etc., which gives homegrown flavour.

As a DA player I have cool bits and bobs from my inner circle to then use on a termie chaplain, mixing the pot if you will. Its fun!

Give those chapters without that flavour their chapter specific unit in addition to the new character. Its “official” flavour and gives the homegrown flavour a massive boost.

The opportunity is now. Get this stuff released. Play with balance. Have it kind-of-mostly polished for 11e.

It’s an interesting discussion. I really like most of the primaris models (phobos cowboy boots aside) but I miss the flexibility and storytelling you could do with different loadouts for tactical marines for example. As an IF player I’m 100% behind the Lysander redesign. It’s a vast improvement over the old model which to be fair I still like. Would love a bit of new lore for him but we’ll see.

Interesting. I found the Marine reveal to be very underwhelming honestly, but I get why you could see it as a good sign now. I for one hoped for a bit more, like some more unit kits to blend the new scale and design with the old look and style of Marines. With the right box of those, I would have probably started a little side project with the Leviathan minis I still own. But right now, the range is still a mess, with not aged well “Firstborn”, many silly “Primaris” and only a few well rounded kits. It didn’t… Read more »

So I heard from some head of marketing/corporate guy at warhammer fest that the studio just put out models and then marketing have to figure out what to do with them, this feels like in retrospect that was probably how it used to work but actually marketing/corporate was pushing for what they wanted to see between 2021/22 and maybe 2024. Now I think they have possibly realised that letting marketing team guide something like this doesn’t work and giving the freedom back to the studio to do what they think is best is the better way to go. Just a… Read more »

Marines stopped being cool with primaris tbh. They lost all their identity to appeal to a wider audience (iron man suits, generic sci fi vehicles, less ornate and gothic, stripped back kits, pushed as noble rather than ruthless and heartless, that awful jhorts tacticool armour).
Not to mention changing them for jack of all trades to specialists at everything and making basic infantry 2 wounds which makes them a slog.
Endless releases have made the range a complete mess or needless things.

Marines are ruining 40k frankly.

I’ve not previously been that interested by space marines, but after I saw Krethusa the Croneseer i thought, if they do Raven Guard like that where they really lean into the raven aesthetic I would be all over that. Then that new raven guard model came out and it looks amazing. I’m defo going to get that one and add it to my mighty space marine collection of a whole three models lol. If they do more in that style I may (definitely) get sucked into doing a Raven Guard army. The current 3 space marine models I’ve done are… Read more »

All of the first founding legions (Loyalist and Traitor) should have at least one individual character and one unit that can only be taken by that army, regardless of whether they get a standalone codex or not.
Word Bearers should have the Gal Vorbak
Alpha Legion should have an infiltrating/sniper unit (essentially what the EC Infractors are)
Iron Hands should have a special Terminator unit
Salamanders should have a souped-up flamer or melta unit
etc. etc.

I think I might be the only person who prefers the new Primaris Marines over first born… I’ve been playing since third edition, and I think their design is superior in every way, including the helmets.

I’m a Dark Angels player, but MAN that Bird has me twitching. What an amazing model! Also, the grav bike is getting me excited to see what they do with my Black Knights and Sammy!

As a non Marine player must say these new models really look awesome , even just buying one or 2 as a painting project. The Iron Hand dude thou with all his bits getting slowly replaced, just makes me think of ‘Triggers Broom’ from Only Fools and Horses

Oh, you mentioned Alpha Legion a couple of times. Remember that rumour engine pic with the pale spear? Did that ever turn out to not be a pale spear or is it still in the ether?

My Hospitallers Moebius need end of edition official chapter approved grow your own chapter rules as they’re currently shelved, honestly not being loyalist Alpha Legion and just really liking chance, liminality and pharmakon. We are very excited by the SM potential and have 30 intercessors arriving to kit bash and bits box raid for my son’s burgeoning Salamanders. It does feel like Marines might be back in their flavourful wonder. We’re going to get one of each of the SM:CP boxes, we hope, and then swap sprues. Son’s already said i get the Mariokart (sad) for my Scars and he… Read more »

Flavour comes in the units outside characters imo, you need chapter specific units to get the core of the chapter and then you have flavour, we already have characters to each chapter (finally white scars, Raven guard and Iron hands have 2) that add a theme but not a feel of the chapter in games. I play the great legion of the 13th and they for a vanilla based codex have the most flavour but that’s due to our Primarch, if it wasn’t for him handing out 2 oaths and a strat reduction we’d be (and was before Decembers Dataslate)… Read more »

So interesting thing about Primaris… they seemed to have dropped it entirely already. I can only speak for the Space Wolves codex but there is no mention of primaris marines in there. Ragnar was one of the first to “cross the rubicon primaris” and in the codex now its just “he underwent some medical procedures”. There’s a whole bit where Gulliman shows up with the torchbearer fleets and the Space Wolves have a bit of a tift about the primaris because they aren’t from fenris… they dropped the primaris wording entirely. This was a very intentional change from the previous… Read more »

Great episode guys! Love the different thoughts opinions but a few things

1. Take away my land raiders or change them in anyway and I will riot… they are perfection

2. Bring back tank tracks like in Horus heresy… gorgeous grim dark space marine battle tanks instead of these hover tanks 🙄

3. No more hover tanks 🤣🤣

Phobos armour is by far my favourite thing in the space marine range (raven guard player)

A good example of keeping what is still here from the first born range, and the new range is the Landraider and Repulsor. I think they exist equally in the game. Landraider with the assault ramp rule is a much better transport for melee armies. Where a Repulsor is much better suited for a shooting army. The same things could be done for rhinos and Impulsors, or any of the models. Give them roles in different army types that “match” them.

Aethon Shaan is the best Soace Marine model they’ve put out in AGES! I’ll be adding him to my burgeoning Raven Guard army day 1!

I think GW have finally realised that what Space Marine players want (and a reason why so many love the Heresy stuff) is the Chapter Specific units, weapons, armour etc. Bringing that “This thing belongs to this Legion and no other” idea into the 41st millennium- and not just for the divergent chapters – is always going to be a winner.

Have to admit as someone who’s recently just got back into the hobby (for real this time) all the talk and realisation that perhaps the Space Marine factions had been watered down was sad to hear so this conversation has been a nice boost.

As a Space Wolf guy I did feel less impacted than others however but felt for those who now lacked the “flavour”.

I actually used a razor back in my last two games as a buffing transport for my primaris sized devistators.

The only big thing on the plate for SM will be their range… we have already far too many units. Far too many detachments. Far too much of anything except flavor. And looking at the range refreshes I am not that excited about basically same armor, but cooler pose and better face and a shoulder pad to represent the different chapters when it comes to units. SM need a massive cull and restart. Split up those armor marks into the legions successors. Reduce the range per sub faction to 30% of what it currently is and start doing proper flavor… Read more »

They should probably try and make 40K great again before they bother with space marines.
But I think they want space marines to be great again.
None of the new models interest me in the slightest as a chaos marines player.
Nice to see Stig though as I thought he was selling his custards and cashing out?

Hot take with tin foil hat
The new SM tanks repulser etc were meant to be replacements for old tracked tanks
Rogal dorns were meant to be new scaled up lemun russ tanks
Primaris were meant to be new marines
But GW thought we can sell more by making them new unit types.

When I first started playing 40k I read about the Raven Guard in the Horus Heresy and started with them. I remember painting up the vanguard vets and sticking lightning claws on everything I could. With only the release of Shrike I started to move away to my other favourite chapter Dark Angels because there were so many cool models and you could really get the feel of the army. Now with the Shaan model I am so excited to bring out my Raven Guard army again and start on them again. Such an incredible model. We just need new… Read more »

Fine with the primaris scaling, but GW need to go back to the Mk 8 Helmet Design.

I would have to disagree with the Primaris being bad when they came out. In 8th edition all the primaris had an extra wound while the first born only had one wound. Primaris were outright better than the first born Unless they had one wound in the Index when 8th began, Primaris were way better than first born.
