What Units Every Warhammer 40k Chaos Legion Needs

The Chaos Legions are packed with terrifying war assets and legendary forces; at least in the lore. But when it comes to the tabletop, a lot of those iconic Chaos units are nowhere to be seen. On today’s show, we’re diving into what units every Chaos Legion should have. From forgotten Legion specialists and Dark Mechanicum creations to corrupted war machines, cult formations, and battlefield roles that exist in the background but not the game, we’re breaking down what’s missing, what’s underrepresented, and what would actually make each Legion and faction feel complete.
So the big question is: What Chaos units SHOULD exist in Warhammer 40k, but don’t yet.

The book harrowmaster does a really good job of showing how different the separate alpha legion warrants are. Some are very mutated overs aren’t. Some are new recruits with no concept of the long war
Firstly I love Erebus because he is the ultimate bad guy and to quote Edmund Blackadder from Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, “Bad guys have all the fun.” 🤣
And…
Secondly could the Alpha Legion benefit from having a Daemonhosts-like units that could buff up units of legionnaires?
Current army is Alpha Legion I simply use Raven Guard rules, quite a lot of Phobos. Combi Weapon Lieutenant, Snipers, Incursors etc.
‘But we are the Hydra Chapter! A very loyal and noble one I assure you!’ 👀
Give Alpha legion 2 detachments 1 loyalist and 1 chaos, you’d get different rules and locked out of certain units depending on which side youre playing. And a once per game strat to switch sides and change out the army rule for the rest of the game
21:27 mark… i like Erebus.
Erebus reminds me of one of my first DnD characters (3.5 ed) where I stabbed our paladin in the back with a dagger that turned him into a Wraith in my service after a year long campaign together where we were trying to stop Orcus…except i was working for him the whole time.
I agree with the Spider we always need a good baddy and my Word Bearers are up for the job. BRING BACK DEAMON SUMMONING
Id really like a weirder range of alien or mutated cultists. Proper mad heretical nonsense. I love the accursed cultists but I’m greedy and want more options.
Damn Mike looks good with a bandana!
Im collecting Iron Warriors (Because of Beard…)
Id love to see Breacher’s for the Death Guard. Give them a shield and the choice of a Bubotic weapon or a Boltgun. Reduce their movement characreristic to 4″ but give them a 5+ invulnerable save. GW seem happy to let Plague Marines be a purely offensive unit (because why wouldn’t you take all those fancy melee weapons for free) so give them a purely defensive one.
Settling down to watch before Traitors, this feels well timed. For my three id say: Some proper Alpha Legion rules in general would be lovely to start. But unit wise, headhunters? And sneaky ‘traitor’ (depends on perspective) guard with embedded booby traps or tech that lets you deep strike in…let’s say…4 inches. Sufficiently Joker and Dancer themed. And a hero who can bring the harrowing. And our primarch(s). 12th edition they bring back Dorn and both of ours. Absolute limbs. Emps Kids – too many people have said sonic dreadnought for this to not now be my pavlovian response. Called… Read more »
I think the way to go with the Alpha Legion is for them to be taken out of CSM and made their own thing: renegade astartes instead of heretic. Leave their intentions deliberately vague. As was brought up in the show, the army should be split between space marine units and mortal units, but I’d have that split almost equal – Alpha Legion aren’t your traditional frontline types on the whole so they’d happily bring in operatives to make up the numbers. I’d also have no mutations or daemon engines in sight. It would be a completely different way to… Read more »
Speaking of good books,…”Banewrecker” or “GodSlayer” by Jacqueline Carey is pretty good. It’s a classic hero turns anti-hero and recruits good people with terrible vices to put the world into a stalemate.
I find it very odd that there aren’t some chaos legion dreadnaughts, if not one for each individual legion then at least one for each chaos god chaos undivided. I don’t mean a big fancy hellbrute or dreadnaught-shaped demon engine, but an actual dreadnaught.
It’s kind of inexplicable; everyone loves dreadnaughts but they just don’t exist for chaos, and it doesn’t make sense for chaos legions to not have them. I want a dreadnaught for my DG. I bet EC, TS, and WE all would like one too.
I think a new Daemon Battleline unit for Bel’Akor. He is the Lord of Shadows so some form of shadow daemon that prays on the shadows and fears of the enemy etc. That would be pretty cool
I’m excited about the upcoming Red Corsairs release, but I wish they’d included updated Chaos Bikers in the release.
