Why would you lose contagions if you had nurgle demons with you? It doesn’t seem thematic at all

It’s worth mentioning that while Noxious Blightbringer is mediocre on his own, his relic is what is going to make him worth taking. Preventing the enemy from being able to fall back on 2+ is pretty darn good! Especially considering your old Hateful Assault attacks are just built into your profiles now, so you will hit them just as hard on this turn as you did on the last one.

I’m going to miss Contaminated Monstrosity. Now we’re saddled with generic Chaos vehicles again.

Typhus doesnt have <Plague Company>, but <Harbringers> instead, therefore – if I take Typhus in any other Plague Company, do I lose Battle Forged?

Do you guys think this is the start of GW really moving away from converting models, and being locked into what is in the box for each unit?
I quite liked my 5-man triple plasma squads and double blight launcher units.

I can’t believe DttFE getting eliminated was posed as a good thing. What did Loyalists give up for doctrines and super-doctrines? Do you think GW is going to be able to give every CSM subfaction something as good as contagions?

All that GW would have had to do for CSM in the interim is release something like they did for SW, BA, DA, DW, and Index CSM. Not as good as a full codex but enough to make CSM playable. 2W marines, the changes to Hell Brutes, some little things like that. Then you would still rely on the PA stuff for legion specifics until a full codex. Regarding the new Codex, how does Typhus make out with the changes to Pox walkers? I am not a DG player, it just seemed that he really shined with the board swarming… Read more »

Think Beard might be a bit down on the Plague Chimenea because of the horrible trauma his noctolith crown suffered

Great listen guys. Completely agree with ya about the radical army shift Chef. DG players will be like necron players when we got updated. I was right alongside everyone lamenting reanimation protocols, but now would I go back to the old book for it? No way! Like a skeletal metal, or now a gross stinky phoenix, those books had to die & armies had to be changed, and so far looks very much for the better!

great review! Liking a lot the “new” army vibe.As you stated and for a third ed. Death Guard player like me, the fun has always been in having plague boots on the ground. That’s what the lore is all about as well. So liking very much getting that play style back vs. the all out zombie tide. And Mortarion.. what to say about him… what a beast! oh boy oh boy.. I’m going to go out to run around in joy and happiness like Bone

I also think it’s weird that they released the Death Gaurd codex before the Chaos Space Marine codex. Especially during a time where one codex (or supplement) is coming out a month, why not go the Space marine route? Release the broad codex and put out some index PDFs… Oh well

I don’t like the limitations of mortarion in making the list, not being able to have psykers in the army if he’s there is frustrating. nice for the lore point or view, not for the game dinamic. i think gw is lowering the power level of the codex. I think loyalist are a bit stronger, and i’m a loyalist player.

Very interesting review, especially in conjunction with the battle report vs ultramarines – thanks guys. On the downside, you’ve just made me buy Mortarian…

Strange how 95% of loyalists marine units, including dreadnoughts, are core, but our demon engines aren’t.

So wait, loyalist get 2 attacks plus their hateful assault, but we don’t. Their dreadnoughts are core and get chapter tactics in addition to -1 wound where ours just gets -1 wound and aren’t core. Im so shocked that gw made chaos just worst versions of loyalists.
The book is great compared to necrons, they’re both decent with nothing amazing. But if you compare it to space marines it’s inferior in every way. Seems to be GW doing what they always do.

The contagion rule sounds amazing, until you recall that it’s on the slowest army in the game. Combined with the initial tiny distance and it’ll very rarely even come into play before 4th turn. I don’t know about you all, but from what I’ve seen so far every game of 9th is over by turn 2, or 3 at the latest. So it’s really not going to do anything. Regardless it’s a very fluffy rule and that makes me like it anyway because it feels very death guard. Great idea poorly designed, (or maybe it’s a great rule in a… Read more »

Great review guys, you really summarized well what I have been feeling about it being different and not feeling like Death Guard, I also agree that it would’ve made more sense that they did csm first

This was really interesting, especially as an Imperium player and continues to make me feel confident that GW will continue making flavoursome codexes for everyone.
…they really just need to get rid of the book system though. It takes too long to update books even at the rate they’re churning them out at the moment.
I think when a Chaos or Tyranids codex drops, I hope it will silence a lot of the traditional criticisms people have of GW. I as a player really want to see that happen.
A better player experience is good for everyone.

So do daemon engines like the Defiler still not benefit from any army-wide rules? It sounds like they don’t get inexorable advance or disgusting resilience. Do they spread contagions?

Really enjoy you two going through the book. The removal of daemonic ritual is the biggest bad for me. I know most people do not like Summoning but it is an iconic thing that I’ve enjoyed about my army (word bearers). I don’t know what CSM and Daemons books will look like but this pushing reinforcement points out of the game means no more summoning. 🙁

Great video! Recently signed up and absolutely loving your content out put.

I do have one concern in that I feel 21ppm for Plague Marines is a massive mistake on GW part. It seems poor for balance and a likely errata target. Annoying oponents early on due to how efficient it makes Plague Marines and Death Guard players later when the inevitable eratta hits. Our club was assuming 24 or 25ppm based on reveals

Great summary Chef & Beard – Death Guard were my first 40k army so its like Christmas all over again this week! Some really fundamental changes that will mean a change in play style for many DG players (bye Grenadebomb & Daemon Engine spam). Having more options and nothing standing out as an auto-take makes for a far more balanced and interesting army and hopefully when we can get back to playing we should see a lot more diverse DG lists. There are a few things I’ll miss that didn’t come over into the new codex, but the thought of… Read more »

Great review chaps! Love the fact that Death Guard now feel more like a force on the table rather than relying on Poxwalkers. One ugly for me was the change to Plague Marine loadouts for combat, only allowing one of each weapon type per 5. My full squad of axes is now slightly redundant.

Chef if you told them to make greater daemons a one of and it comes to be true I am going to be a broken man. All of my armies from age of sigmar can’t be played in 40k, I will loose allot of money and time and worst of all I won’t be able to field all of my favourite models. Daemons have a tiny range in 40k as it is and the hq was where all the flavour was. Not to mention building a themed army around one god will be even more trash tier than it is… Read more »

Excellent summary guys, I love batreps and all that but I think these voxcasts are actually my favourite content on the site – especially when Chef is involved! I really hope that GW doubles-down on this sort of rules theming for all 9th edition Codexes. It would be very cool, for example, if Hive Fleet Gorgon got rules for their uber-toxins which could ‘infect’ enemy units and lower their toughness or have the potential to cause mortal wounds every turn, or for Hive Fleet Hydra’s ‘endless swarm’ to function like Resurrection Protocols so that core infantry units can regenerate models… Read more »

Playing against dg was so annoying before, so disheartening with resilient stopping wounds, especially when your opponent rolls well, it felt like you were doing nothing. This new damage reduction rule feels much better.

I would not mind situational warlord traits half as much if you were not locked into the same trait for a whole tournament (same for psychic powers and similar). One of the more boring changes going into 9th, taking away a tactical decision under the pretense of being a great way to speed up the game.

André Orthmann

Thx for your thoughts guys.

@Beard: Regarding CSM codex you’re 100% right. I think it all the time that it would have been the best if GW has issued it directly in the beginning together with Necrons (due to Indomitus theme) and SM.
In addition i would say: main faction should be prior any supplements anyway (even for xenos).

As DG is my second army, I was really looking forward to this. I feel like the changes previewed are mostly good; I am ok with the changes to DR cause I’ve seen what it did for the dreadnaughts, and it’s a good balance between cost-effect and not being a eccessive pain for the opponent. I am more annoyed by the fact that my army will probably be no playable anymore, not for the fear of changes Beard was talking about but for the state of my wallet. How much will I be forced to fork out to have a… Read more »

My only issue with new DR is that it does nothing for D1. I dont care about MW,but just from a fluff point it feels poor. It might become stronger as more d3d becomes set d2 but its just that kick to the feel imo

Personally, I like the change to Disgustingly Resilient. I mean, the biggest issue I suppose is that it no longer provides protection against Mortal Wounds. But honestly fighting a Death Guard which is played by someone like Lawrence (thank the powers you didn’t give him that army to custodian during the pandemic) would be awful since he never really rolls less than a 5 anyway. It just makes the game take much longer for no real reason, if that makes sense. Or at least, it’s annoying and not really all that fun watching your bolter fire ricochet off a marine… Read more »
