The venomcrawler (and daemon engines in general) starts to look pretty nasty when you add in the new Lord Discordant fella that GW just announced, with the +1 to hit aura.

Love the infiltrators.. along with the re-deploy warlord trait. So many shenanigans to be had! But really struggling to understand the new suppressors. Very mobile unit.. with a long range heavy weapon that wants to stay still, High strength/ap and multi damage gun that wants to target vehicles etc… with a special rule that makes it want to target infantry? as a space wolf player the only things i’m afraid to charge is the castellan, Valiant or Tau.. squeezing in a 99 point unit for that one time in a tournament I have to charge a few flamers doesn’t seem… Read more »

What do you guys think about how competative 3 chaos decimators with soul petrards are now with the new chaos is that buffs demon engines? Mortal wounding on 2s? Add in a chaos lord or demon prince to refill ones? Then it will pretty much kill what you point it at

I think these new models are fantastic and the rules for them, especially the new Primaris squads, is a massive game changer.

However, I cannot help feel very sad and disappointed that the old marines are being treated so. Hard not to feel put off when the army you’ve spent over 20 years building and paint are basically being made redundant. Very sad times.

For the points, in a BA army, I think my 30 CC scouts is still better than taking the new Primaris infiltrators. I think more models > less models even with Primaris having stronger stats. More threatening unit saturation. Small groups of Primaris still die quickly.

Further thoughts on this excellent breakdown: I agree with Spider and Ben (I think Bone was retired with the stache, he’s just Ben now) on their comments. This set significantly improves space marines. Chaos honestly is far worse off when you compare where the two are in the meta. Chaos is supposed to the main scary bad guys in the fluff and yet not since 3.5 has Chaos been a truly competitive army. My hopes mirrors Spider and Ben’s: GW needs to release a new codex for SM and Chaos. Buffing Chaos in this hypothetical new codex is absolutely needed.… Read more »

So the new scout units have to deploy 9″ away from the enemy deployment zone, which would mean that you could influence where your opponent deploys there units as well to some degree if I am understanding it correctly. It also kind of negates the Eldar webway strike since just about everything they have that you would want to deepstrike has a 12″ shooting range. I wonder if that was a response to Yannari?

I wish Spider would address the fact that Death Guard and Thousand Sons get no benefits from this box. I know they filmed this before the GW clarification but we don’t get anything from these models.

18+15+2 = 35.
That’s only 2 points more than a Hellblaster, so it’s not super expensive, and I expect the unit size will be 6 max.

Sadly I think everything is just a tiny bit over-pointed at the moment. similar to the units released in the Dark Imperium box set. I’m looking forward to the full kits getting released, increase unit sizes and some improved points cost. I highly doubt that the eliminators will more than double in size, 6-man would be the the max more than likely. So sorry Spider I don’t think you’ll be getting your 10-man eliminator unit/.

I’m really sad that the Oblitirators went up this many points.
I have held off buying them due to waiting for new models. when we finally get new models they are pointed to a point where I am not sure they are worth it. :S

Thanks for that lengthy overview though I “wish” you’d put up an image of the new unit you are discussing – that will help focus our concentration on the units we’re really interested. Thanks for discussing datasheets without showing them.

So,
I am considering making a pure primaris army, and looked at these models.
While they are cool, I am still left with the feeling, that Primaris still don’t have any real melee combat potential? Or am I mistaken – am quite a new player sooo

As a Primais player i am very much looking forward to this boxset. I can’t wait to see what lists you guys come up with and the what synergies you shall find.

I can see the Suppressor Sergent use his smoke launcher in a larger squad (if possible) early in the game, where the opponent has lots of shooting. Sacrificing 1 gun for that added protection would be worth the loss of shots.

Already been confirmed that Shadowspear contents will not work with DG and 1k sons by Warhammer twitter account. 🙁

Very illuminating review thanks guys! I feel much the same way about chaos, it all feels a bit odds and ends right now. Especially as someone who’s had a soft spot for the World Eaters since back in 4th I’m aching to see them be a thing at all again, along with CSM in general. It feels like both astartes are just massively in flux which feels both promising and awkward, as there are various units that feel a bit irrelevant. I feel like something needs to be done about all the old marines units bc right now they just… Read more »

Spider. I must say you made a miscalculation for the Suppressors, 18 pts a model + 15 per gun = 33 pts total. Temporal corridor would go really well with Space wolves. They have some advance and charge abilities IIRC. I feel kinda let down by the Hallucination power as for example the Aversion physic power with DA is WC value of 6 and a straight -1 to hit. Now Hallucination has more potential with -1 leadership, -1 to hit, but you don’t control what I feel is the better debuff. That -1 hit.

Isn’t demonforged a one CP start that can reroll all misses and reroll wounds? I am only a lonely nid player but I would kill to have that on my big bugs.

One tactic I’ve seen (I have no idea if others have picked up on it) is; to run big 40man blob of cultists alongside Abaddon (on current rules), with 2 Master of possessions and a venom crawler).

Use one MoP to psychic summon a defiler, buffed summon by venom, and keep it topped up on hp with sacrifice, using cultists as fodder. The other MoP keeps buffing the defiler, and Abaddon can keep cultists from running, and guard the bulk.

I’m really excited about some of the new stuff, especially infiltrators. If Suppressors end up getting weapon options down the road (seems likely since the autocannon cost is listed separately), they could also be really fun. As a Black Templars player, I’ll have to find something else to do with the witch that comes in the box.

Spider, if you’re into making armies perceived as “bad” work, how about a BT battle report with the Vigilus detachment and maybe a new Culexus assassin?

Also Obliterators are difficult to cost because with all there possible layered buffs they are actually worth near that cost. Prescience, veterans of the long war, cursed earth, alpha legion, slaanesh, delightful agonies, cover, endless cacophany. Then with gaze of fate you get another free re roll. So thats 36 shots usually hitting on 2s and wounding on 2s. Rerolling 1s. Averaging more than 2 dmg a shot. They are also t5, 1+ save, -1 to hit and a 5+ FnP with 4 wounds. The problem is really Vect as they cant shoot twice so it halves there value and… Read more »

So some corrections. The Chaos Space Marine codex says anyone with the Chaos Space Marine keyword cant be Thousand Sons or Death Guard. Daemon Princes sheet says select from Dark Hereticus discipline so no malefic.

Lawrence, is their any chance you guys could do a game using reserve points and summoning in demons to demonstrate how it works and any tactical ways to do it. I have never actually played against someone who has used it before and don’t fully understand how it works, and would love to see it in action, especially knowing how one of the top 8 at LVO used it so successfully.

A coupe of big insights, remember the warlord traits buff CHAPTER units. +1 to hit on 10 hellblasters, or +1 to charge on dreadnaughts/wulfen. As a SW player I am super excited, since infiltrators concealed positions is something I dont have access too (hooray for crappy elite scouts). Setup 10 infiltrators with a wolf lord+rune priest in phobos into cover with wulfen stone and armor of russ. People will not be counter charging that, and you can use them to pin units for your assault. Shrouding can also stop overwatch by having another unit closer when they charger (it doesnt… Read more »

Is the accelerator auto cannon 25 or 15pts? If 18 for model and 15 for weapon as you said the models are 33 points per model not 43 🙂

You were close Bone! A Suppressor Squad costs 105 points all in. However, the Scyrers Gaze and the other powers won’t work on them as they aren’t Phobos units.

My problem with Reivers, is, even with the new powers etc, i still don’t see the point in taking them. Even with knifes and pistols they don’t seem to do the damage even when they get into combat.

B-Rad

Spider, you said the phobos marines are available to other marine codexes, did the book say that includes deathwatch?

I think this puts some distance between cherub-bone and B-bone, which is well deserved. However, I think you lost some connection to your ethereal as well. I think you need to compensate this by wearing your purple toga on all T’au-batreps, because you can’t be the great commander if you aren’t one with your warlord.
