Regarding having Maelstrom back in the game…
Why can’t you just play Maelstrom anyway? Because GW hasn’t said you can? Sure it might need some minor adaptions to get the cards working with 9th (I would’ve thought most cards would work without any changes) but there’s absolutely no reason why you couldn’t play Maelstrom missions anyway. You are not a GW owned channel or business. You can do what you want. If you want to play 9th edition Maelstrom, then do it! Why do you seem to believe you’re restricted to what GW say you can do?

Bone & Beard are meant to lead us! Bring forth the CA19 and play some 9th ed Maelstrom games! If you do it, people will follow!

Guys, great commentary. In agreement with everything you said. I mostly loved your thoughts on Maelstrom. I played in two 1500pt RTTs using Maelstrom back in 2019 and they were hugely fun. And you’re right they made you ‘react’ the randomness of the deck. It levelled the playing field between excellent and average players to the point where everyone had to work hard for the win. On occasion it went nuts and people got crippled by a bad deck, but the deck design rules did change that for the most part. Those 6 games were my only proper games I… Read more »

Agree with Bone on the release of codices. It’s not that I want to buy yet another book, but I would prefer something like indexes in 8th where we have current rules for our army on day 1.

I love playing 40K and throwing dice regardless but I’m finding the missions very ‘samey’ in 9th, which is a shared view of other people I play against. You come back to the same secondaries and the primary is effectively the same every game making each game similar. I understand this from competitive consistency but miss maelstrom as a different way to play and keep variety.

Yes, great vid and analysis and yes, Bring back Maelstrom. I agree we need more fun and beer and pretzels in the game.

I’m loving the gameshow/chatty aspects of this one. Have fun with it, banter is good.

@beard: they did made rules during firstt FAQ waves for space marines, it was called indexes. They could just as well have made the same for GKs, Chaos, and TS so that every SM has +1W and proper range on their weapons fors instance.

My biggest worry about 40k at the moment is exactly as Bone says, Codex releases are frankly a little silly. The books for 8th weren’t even completely out when 9th was announced, after taking a silly amount of time to even get there. If the same happens with 9th (books take 3 years to come out) it will be the end of buying any new editions for me. When GW announce a new edition the play testing should have been completed and ALL codices should be available for purchase. We don’t all have 18 armies and waiting 3 years for… Read more »

I could not agree more on the maelstrom thing. 9th seems like a tight rule set and the core rules are smooth and fun for the most part, but god almighty the mission is dull as balls. I’ve played about 40 games of 9th (when covid has allowed) with 3 very different armies (new codexes and none) and it just feels like I’m playing the same game over and over: no matter the deployment type, number of objectives or what secondaries I choose, the game is pretty much always won or lost by turn 3 and is pointless to continue.… Read more »

100% on bring back Maelstrom. It definitely made for more interesting games to watch. To be honest, lately I get through two turns on the games lately then turn them off knowing the conclusion. I hope the updated secondaries help that but 9th edition missions aren’t all that exciting.

You all need to grind Spider down to let you do Flashback Fridays with Maelstrom and Multiball!

I played 3 games at the weekend (a 3 round tournament) with the new rules (but pre faq points). It has much improved the game. I don’t think any of the 14 players bemoaned the changes. For a Dark Eldar player the changes to bring it down worked a treat. I even beat 2 marines lists 😛 It shows they are looking at data as ITC battles had Bring it Down and Abhor the Witch as two of the most highly scoring secondaries and anyone who takes factions that can only work with massed light vehicles / psykers will know… Read more »

I agree that having maelstrom again as a choice would be great. That more fun side of playing I think is a must when representing 40k in general, it doesn’t always have to be super serious it can just be a proper laugh and maelstrom 100% feeds into that.

Loving 2021 content so far lads, you all have literally been my lockdown saviours. If you guys weren’t making content through these hard times life we be a lot less fun.
Peace ✌

I would have liked to hear your thoughts on the clarification that stratagems which can deny spells on a dice roll, which quite a few factions have (scorn of sorcery for instance), are also able to be used to deny psychic actions. This is a huge change and detriment to psyker heavy armies. Those of us suffering from double dipping secondaries (ass + abhor or bring it down + abhor) were able to claw some easy points back by doing mental interrogations without challenge. Now several non psyker armies can threaten to take VP away from me every turn on… Read more »

Hi everyone from TTT. Nice article, I am also missing deck building from 8th edition. As you mentioned it in this video, this dynamic is now more straightforward, main mission is still the same, only position and number of objectives on the table can make it slightly different. With card deck in 8th., especially when you could make your own 18-cards deck this deck even more suppored your army play style, army list and “fluff” feeling.

I also miss Maelstrom, especially deck building Maelstrom. That was very funny, and tactical as well, in its own way.
I like 9th, probably better than 8th, but I would like primary and secondary objectives to be a bit more balanced.

I think the remark about getting to the action quicker refers to the amount of brainpower (and time) that needs to be put in the descision to go first or not (analysis paralysis). You get to the action quicker in terms of starting the game sooner.

I live in Manchester and have played 2 whole games of 9th so far in 6 months(?) due to covid. I probably wont get to play for months into 2021 either. I feel like this edition is passing me by. But your videos are great in keeping me up to date! Are you forced to roll to go first. Or can you opt not to roll and forfeit the right. Or is it “illegal”? I am disappointed that all the mission objectives and secondaries are just about holding ground and killing units (mainly). I agree that a maelstrom element could… Read more »

thx for sharing your thoughts guys. And regarding Mahlstrom i think you are 100% right. I mean where is the problem to put this rule back in “optional”. If people dont like to play it… fine… if they like to play it… also finde. Same with the current “core rule book secondary missions” and the “grand tournament 2020 secondary missions”. With my 40k playing friends we often decide to play GT2020 just due to the light changes on the secondaries but from time to time its good to have the eternal war missions as well. Its mixing things up and… Read more »

The best way for GW to see how good bringing back the malestrom cards would be, pull the cards out and see how it goes on the table top. Would love to see how it plays with 9th ed rules

Awesome video guys, and I think your insights were pretty on the nose. 9th feels great to play and even casual games I’ve had have more or less always been nailbiters, even with people new to playing which I think speaks a lot of how much terrain and more streamlined rules has helped with the intuitiveness of it. Feels great when you can just get together and have an awesome, back and forth game without worrying that you’re gonna just blow your opponent away turn 2 (or vice versa) and everyone just feels bad Ultimately I think the changes here… Read more »

Very nice discussion, and I think you are mostly right on all the points you made. I have just a couple of observations: While we stand… : you highlighted how in some cases it become better, but maybe you missed that it was also a nerf (that I very much approve). Imagine for example this: an Ultramarine list with Calgar, Tigurius and an apothecary in the middle of a huge castle of marines with also victrix guard to defend against snipers. You will almost never be able to kill the characters, and your opponent will have 15pts without really having… Read more »

I have mentioned this before but I do wonder what your guy’s take on this is. Honestly with regards to state of the game, I feel like faction Lord of War units are pretty much unplayable in a competitive setting due to being (usually) overcosted and now 3CP as well. I feel like adding 1 Lord of War slot to battalions and 2 Lord of War slots to a brigade would help with these super cool but mostly pointsing units like the baneblades, monoliths, admech/eldar knights and so on. Now that armies are penalised for souping (marines with doctrines for… Read more »

I think it’s a bit of a shame that the new FAQ doesnt effect the BRB missions, I’m planning on just house-ruling those into the BRB stuff

Awesome video gentlemen! Hopefully we will hear news about a guard codex coming soon, it’s been over 3 years now… but myself being a Tempestus player, I think we are in an ok spot as of right now. Keep up the great work!

Great video guys keep up the good work. I’d love maelstrom to return to us for 9th edition as well hopefully GW will bring out a chapter approved version in the near future.

Michael 'The Scorpion'

I think because of the frequency the TTT crew play WH40K you’ve identified a missing element ahead of most of us in the community. Maelstrom was sensational fun. I wonder how much tweaking would be required to use the cards in 9th? 🤷🏼‍♂️

For the Abhor the witch secondary, could you take it previously if you had a psyker unit?

Could you just play 8th Maelstrom in 9th? Would it still work?

I’m personally confused by the new Rare rules clarification on Normal move. The change seems to kill part of the usefulness of abilities such as Twilight Pathways or Quicken, as you’d no longer be able to Advance, and yet both Harlequins and Craftworlds still have specific FAQs allowing it (albeit the Harleys one is odd since it specifies after having Fallen Back). But so many people in the 40k community are trying to argue that the FAQs should just be ignored… it’s weird. It feels like GW either forgot to delete those specific FAQs, or forgot that they exist, or… Read more »
