Deep behind enemy lines Gaunt’s ghosts find themselves surrounded. Relentlessly hunted through the jungle and pursued by the dark forces of chaos they are exhausted and bloodied, but far from beaten… they make their stand in the brand new HERO MODE!!! We have been working hard behind the scenes to bring you a new way to play 40k. Inspired by @thepoorhammerpodcast ‘s excellent horde mode we are introducing Hero Mode, a cinematic, wave based Co-op mode where you can test the mettle of your favourite character units in the Crucible of Heroes.

Played a couple games last night against a necron horde and oh my god it was really hard lol. We couldn’t really accomplish anything as space marines, then in the second game we played as custodes and just made it by the skin of our teeth. Will you perhaps add like a small elite squad to be attached to models to give some factions more power?
Here’s a potential Idea for a way to use multiple factions of heroes, what if they used the boarding action army rules instead of the codex/index army rules, that way it might make the characters a little more balanced. Just a thought
This is awesome, and I feel like a Autarch Skyrunner with dragon fusion gun would be pretty great at it!

Excellent game idea. I’m debating if the auto move within 9″ (I think Gaunt has that???) is something they should have or if that would be too much.
Ah that was brilliant guys, been looking forward to this one for a few weeks now. Really felt like it was a desperate last stand, lots of epic moments but backs up against the wall. Well done!
Also the paint job on the Ghosts is unreal 😍
Epic, love tanith. It did seem like it was too one sided though. The tanith were to easy to kill and get too. Could kinda see where it was going early on. Maybe thats lawrences rolling though 😂😉
Maybe the heroes get the first turn or maybe the old rules of screening characters need to be added? That way the horde has to fight through the bods first. You cant attach the ghosts to infantry like other characters ya see.
Really fun game and love seeing the Ghosts about. Plot armour definitely favours those models with a better base save – massed shooting really made things difficult for the Tanith, but they held out well.
Be cool to see a Scion or Kasrkin force falling back for extraction after a mission, although admittedly with their options they’d really struggle against armour.
Good to see the ghosts getting a game in. With the horde army selection. Is it just battle line units that need to hold maximum models or is that all horde units must have maximum models allowed?
Awesome game and great looking mode! Did the tank commander not get their shoot on death? That could have made for either an excellent last stand, or a classic bard whiff!
I love this mode, such a great addition. Would love to see how it would work with something like boarding actions, tight corridors etc.
My only feedback from a game I’ve played with my buddy, and a way to tone down the difficulty, was to have the heroes have turn 1 after the horde first spawns, we did a game with the written rules and a game with the heroes going first, both were super fun and the second was much much easier for anyone who wants an easier game.
What a playtest! Kudos Spider on this, incredible work and it just looks so fun – and I love the narrative spin!

This is a ton of fun! Great seeing the Ghosts, that’s fantastic paintwork by Fletcher! It’s a pity GW doesn’t have rules to make dreadnoughts into characters, I’d love to try my Redemptor at this.
Also, Bard: Cleanse your dice man! Those rolls were absurd! 🤣
I think you mentioned it in the podcast but it would be good to see how it works with small kill teams/units too.
Deathwing, Sanguinary Guard, Grey Knights.
With the Grey knights kill team it could be a mix like the chaos gate game, 1 purifier, 1 judicar, 1 purgator, 1 intercessor with an apothocary maybe. Oh I need to give this a go
This mode is so good can’t use my custodes against my son’s orks! Though I do think that the “hero’s” will struggle against too much armour/tanks… only one way to find out… kill in the name of the emperor!!!!

I have no idea how they would handle anything tanky…

Given that they don’t get the recovery strat, an auto-explode option (maybe even at max on the dice 🙂 ) for the vehicles might be a nice addition. Defiant to the last.
Such an awesome game mode! I think this playstyle makes for great rival faction games. Keenly awaiting a necron hero match… regenerating wounds and using the 2CP strat could make for some very aggressive plays.
On Ghosts turn 2 and James rolling has been so below average even by his standards. More 1s and 2s than can be counted!! Fun game still so far.
