I cant agree more with Mr Bard. the Imperials should get a troop choice, not admech, but maybe just something out of imperial agents

The detachments are great, they give you utility and the ability to score and hold those onjectives and do those secondaries while your knights kill stuff.

It also gives your knights screens to block charges. All kinds of utility.

was super excited bout the new chaos knight detachment, I like the army rule, like the idea of bringing cultists and they buff your big knight by sacrificing them, thats great love the idea of that… however the enhancements and especially the strats are really poor. i like the advance and charge strat thats really nice, lancers have become super dangerous with the potential of a big first turn charge perhaps. however the rest of them are poor, losing knights of shade and also rotate ion shields is a big blow. big knights aren’t being played as much and I… Read more »

I agree. Instead of running a special Detachment to run chafe units, GWS could have included Cultist units in the Chaos Knight codex.

Putting Profane Altar on the Chef Special dual Gatling Despoiler, and then having it do its thing on the midboard, surrounded by an ever-diminishing horde of Cultists, might be worth a try?

Contrast the CK detachment with the Starshatter Arsenal. Chalk and cheese… very disappointed GW. Don’t really want to spend cash on 60 cultists to make an iffy detachment rule work, even if I do already own the CSM codex.

Really excited to try the chaos knight detachment I have been wanting the thralls to be a thing in game. Sure it’s not the strongest detachment but I think it can work and be fun too.

I actually really like the Imperial Knight detachment but a big part of that is that I have an Ad Mech army and a bunch of knights I haven’t built yet! That aside, I love the idea of having some infantry support for the big stompy robots to be a distraction and do actions, etc. Getting hold of datasheets without buying a codex shouldn’t be too much of a hassle and in most games outside of tournaments (& lets face it, this isn’t competitive) your opponent should be fine with you proxying any other models you have for Skitarii or… Read more »

very interesting theme, and I do like the idea for both detachments. I find it a bit odd that transports have not been included, but then ad-mech units can run fast and for long periods of time 😉 I will definitely be testing these rules with IK (and Adeptus Titanicus).

Both of these detachments are pretty disappointing tbh. I hope they saved the good detachments for the codexes 😅

Both are fluffy in their own ways (defo not competitive) but if this was a mix between the index CK detachment it could be very competitive.

@Chef – do a game with them mixed as you say. Would be interesting to see how it went.

Honestly I don’t think the Chaos Knight detachment is bad. A lot of people say that the old one is also bad but I have always had trouble against their battleshock manipulation. A lot of factions have leadership 7 and with their aura you can start having a lot of issues.
Another thing that this changes is that you may see a bit different lists.
Seeing 13 little knights in every chaos knight list makes you not want to play against the faction.
And this may bring in some variation 🙂

Considering how many people might already have these secondary codexes, and how easy it is to find datasheets online, you’re not really being forced to buy another codex to use these. Both knights wanted cheap units to do actions etc, so they help in that regard. The biggest chaos knight, tyrant?, staying at the back with a big blob of cultists and the use both sustained and lethal enhancement, will be very Killy.

I’ve never got the fascination of adding serfs or household guard to Imperial Knights. Outside their home planets it’s just not a thing in the fluff and even Sacristans directly on the front line feels a bit iffy to me.
I’m an Admech player though as well so I’ll give it a go but my impression of the detachment is it’s not very good and worries me about the codex detachments with the lack of Rotate as a strat.

Personally I think the chaos detachment rule isnt THAT bad, looking at the datasheets, its only the shooty knights that are going to benefit from the dark pacts in any meaningful way. Personally i think the stat will probs end up being that you have a large blob of 20 cultist surrounding either a despoiler or a tyrant with the dark alter enhancement so that it gets both lethal and sustained because the rampager already gets sustained on the turn it charges and doesnt really need lethal and the abominant has sustained built in to its melee already and again… Read more »

I don’t play either Knight faction but this does seem a bit like a test balloon to add more infantry to Knights down the road, doesn’t it? As in a test run with annoying cross-codex lists to figure out if it’s worth it to include chaff in the main codices? If so, this seems fairly reasonable to me who likes the idea to make Knights multi-dimensional but again, I don’t know if players want all stompy robot lists exclusively.

Oof, feels like you could have both Chaos Knight detachments active at once and it would still be only a tiny power increase.

Will the chaos knight detachment be super competitive? No, of course not. But I find the idea of sticking a horde of cultists around a volcano lance&plasma tyrant hilarious, giving out a 20
point enhancement for lethal and sustained hits, and having it churn through the bodies around it, to be absolutely hilarious

I have a feeling the admec and dammed units will be in the knights codex as battle line. Feels a bit shady that we’d have to buy a different codex atm though. I have the same feeling about the custodes one. The Detachment is all for the Forge World models, so I have a feeling they get plastic kits with the codex, once they’ve sold out of resin.

I like these detachments for two reasons. First we know they are getting a codex with other more spicy detachments hopefully. But this one leans more towards thematic, with your real killers in the knights just sacrificing your useless cultists followers. Second this feels like a good alternative to people who like to run mostl big knights as you now can buff them up pretty good while having smaller infantry for the usual reasons, so I am pretty happy about them both.

Hmmm, suppose it does give a space filler option on oddly pointed lists (we’ve all had those lists with 120 or so points spare and nothing to do with it) but don’t know that I wanna rush out and buy boxes of cultists for it. On the other hand bet Stig can’t wait to try out the imperial detachment

hm sad. I dont have any Admech units so the Detachment is not useful for me 🙁 But lets see what the Codex brings next year
