Recently the Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered dropped suddenly and has been regarded very positively by new fans and veterans alike. So it got us thinking, could Warhammer 40k benefit from a similar treatment? Could a greatest hits of older editions hit a zeitgeist and create a space for both older style rules and miniatures? Bard, Beard and Spider sit down to discuss if a trip down memory lane could actually be an exciting new way to play.

I think I’d like to see 10th edition hitting, wounding, and saving systems but with all the old stuff added in. Blast templates, scatter dice, deepstriking and psychic mishaps. Then bring back wargear granularity and allow characters and sergeants to be fully customizable.
I wonder whether that’s their plan for 11th edition

With the talks of remastered Warhammer and the urge of playing a more zainy fun version of the game . Do you think you guys would delve into the Horus heresy ? With the hugely rich lore and being of older ruleset with rules like deepstrike mishap’s and scatter dice is it not the game you guys are wanting ?

Ive introduced third edition to my students who attend the Warhammer club I run at work. It’s been quite fun to play albeit a bit of a learning curve.

As a quick fix on GW’s side is to give Warhammer + members access to the old editions. Not sure if it’s something they do already but it allows then to get a rolling profit while making it accessible to new audiences.

I do love these deep dives, remaking the 2nd Ed box set would be such a nostalgia trio, even with modern minis.
That’s something I love doing, blending old and new to get the feel of old but the quality of new.
Also bring back Tactical squads and the picking of wargear!!!

Well essentially, this already exists ruleswise… its called Horus Heresy…

Absolutely on board with the pseudo-sportification of the game making it less…. fun; bring back the random events! This is war! The best laid plans and all that!

I reckon there’s two ways to look at this: from the GW attracting new customers and growing their market and then from us players at home. Remasters apply to the first, but the second? I recently picked up a third ed rulebook and some codexs online and have been having a great time having the games I always wanted to have when I was 11 but wasn’t able to! What I’m trying to say is that we can play these games however we damn well please. Divorce yourself from GW’s business model and the horizons are limitless. Absolutely no disrespect… Read more »

Having just caught the end of 2ed (losing every time to my older brother because I’m sure he was making half of it up!) and then getting more into Warhammer from 3rd through to edition 4.5, behind my rose tinted glasses there’s quite a few things I miss about 40k of old: heroes with their retinues a la the chaos codex with Abbadon crushing a planet in his hand; guess range on basilisks; praying I didn’t roll too high or low on my psychic tests; rolling a 6 on the glancing shots table for vehicles; not having to have a… Read more »

What you’re talking about is pretty much Horus heresy…

I started in 2nd ed, used to play all the time, have fond memories of getting dark millennium for my birthday and all the craziness that brought. I would love a legacy streamlined edition, miss templates, scatter etc. But mostly how much more impact full vehicles were. Loved the arcs or fire and different armour faces, vehicles were intimidating and powerful and you really had to think about how to deal with them. Good times.

What I’d like to see would be for them to remake/remaster killteam with the original idea of it being a skirmish game where every team is unique with it’s own style, eg some with a few slow tanky models and others with lots of fast squishy models. At the moment it seems to be used as a vehicle to release new 10 man infantry squads for the main game and so has lost some of its uniqueness, like it’s become too standardised if that makes sense. What i think would also be cool is if they loosened up the team… Read more »

I didn’t get in until 4th edition, but I really loved 7th edition until formations started to run rampant.

For me the best of Warhammer is right now is the Horus Heresy. One of the biggest thing I would like to change is Line of Sight – for me its so frustrating that you can kill a whole squad because one guy holds a banner

They would need to make the paints smell like they used too.

Back in the mists of time, I dimly recall a game from 2nd edition where my Chaos Terminator Lord punched a Blood Angels dreadnought (represented by one of the Space Crusade dreadnought minis) with his power fist, the dreadnought then toppled directly forwards onto the Lord and crushed him, removing his last wound. The game finished with my lone Plaguebearer holed up inside a crippled Land Raider whilst my opponent had an Apothecary stood outside ready to shoot him with his bolt pistol. We agreed on a draw as it would have been a shame to win or lose after… Read more »

Not a single “hero of Kvatch” pun. I’m disappointed.

9th Edition was just about perfect – the main problem was that it really rewarded players that play 1-2 armies. If you were a competitive player and were chasing the meta, the mental load of remembering the special rules, etc. for multiple armies was unmanageable. Of course, for a company that wants to sell models, rewarding players for collecting and playing only 1-2 armies ran counter to their business model, which is why I think we saw so many updates to core rules and to army rules. But if 9th was to be revisited, I wonder if the mental load… Read more »

Yall should do a “what 11th should include” and each represent 1 big element you lobby for. Like spider advocates for vehicle tables again etc

Controversial opinion: redo the 2nd edition rules to be used for combat patrol skirmish games in 11th edition. Let’s be real: the fixed wargear of combat patrols as currently sold to us sucks. That said, all of the 10th edition combat patrols are right around 400-500 points in standard 40K. You could balance the rules of each combat patrol in a single tome that is added to the 40K 11th edition launch box, and bring back scatter dice/templates for this as a true secondary game mode. Think kill team, but bigger and nostalgic rules. NOT fixed wargear, but their own… Read more »

If they rereleased 2nd Ed with the dark imperium box and, let’s say orks, nids, eldar, marines, chaos

I’d buy all the boxes and multiple armies. Old 2nd Ed models, the lot. My nostalgia for the period is the sculpting and art style. Modern models are undeniably great, but there’s a certain charm about 2nd Ed.

If this is really you asking if people are interested in you playing 30k: The answer is YES.

If you’re gonna redo the models that were in the box, you need to keep the gretchin as caltrops with those helmet spikes. Standing on them was no fun when playing floorhammer.

I don’t see it coming simply because its so many versions to pick from. ‘Best of’ old editions will be HH, but they won’t add modern armies to not end up having 2 system going for the same crowd (see new AoS release vs ToW). …and the actual solution for what system to revitalize is going to depend on your group of players. This would be splitting the market further to the point of just grabbing old edition rules and codices would probably be more efficient… or just homebrew in your group. For me 10th is most likely the last… Read more »

I agree, i would like the RPG part of the game back. I loved buying gear for my army. I miss it. This is new speed up is just for faster games in context of Tourneys, I think like almost every game out there the sweats got a hold of it and then the company think of all the endorsements and the spotlight of competition. I agree with everything you all are talking about. there taking the fun out it. Case in point is called math hammer for a reason now.

I mean, we have the nicer miniatures now and the old rules still exist, so wouldn’t playing an older edition with modern miniatures already be a remaster? I do like the idea of building a best of version of the game with the best crunch and fluff of all the rules.

Fun discussion.
2nd ed was my first edition, while fun I don’t remember actually ever finishing a game…
As for wargear, I see your vortex grenade and raise you a good old Virus Grenade. The true terror of those without sealed armour!

If GW saw this and decided, today, to start a legacy project, we still wouldn’t see it for a decade.

Do Heresy…….you know you want to. Scatter dice, templates, ridiculous and thematic wargear.
