Such an awesome & interesting watch! A great walk down memory lane and awareness for those who joined the game later. Greatly appreciate the huge amount of work that must have gone into developing this – youā€™re a legend Chef!

Great video. Really good listen. Though it does make me feel old. Apart from 1st edition, I’ve played all the others.

This was a delight. It’s a fantastic nostalgia rundown. As a 30-year vet of the game and hobby, this was wonderful.

would love to see a scenario played with identical lists over each edition to see how it changed peoples approach to games.

Chef (and Beard), I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to smash this total nostalgia fest!! Seeing some of those 2nd and 3rd edition pages flash up as you were talking, took me right back to my living room carpet with a subbuteo mat draped over stacked up books or VHS tapes and my lead Catachan jungle fighters taking on my mates Eldar in our the latest attempt to try and understand the rules enough to play a coherent game. It’s been a dive back into some epic memories of pure childhood bliss!! I imagine this… Read more Ā»

I would really like to see a video explaining when each of the factions became playable in the game.

This was a great vid! I started my 40k journey in late 3rd edition, and this was alot of fun to see. But also really interesting to watch the evolution of editions. Thank you so much for doing this i know it was a massive task!
I would love to see this style of vid for each TT members favorite or chosen army šŸ™‚

This was such a refreshing video and so nicely done.. need more of these off shot videos and the production was so neat and on point.. Excellant work

Ever thought of you guys having random one offs of a game using old editions to give a more in depth view of how the game has changed šŸ™ƒ

Keep up the great work

This was very interesting. I started with 8th edition and I did not know the history of the game. Very cool hobby history. Thank you!

Really interesting video! It’s also helped me pinpoint when I actually started playing because I never knew what edition number we were on just casually playing as a kid XD

great video. i think its really good to know the history of something to really understand it. leaving at 3rd and coming back to 9th had me with a lot of head scratching that only made sense once i knew the reason for the change… yet oddly i was sure to remember that rolling for charges was already back in the 90s – damn old man brain šŸ˜€

Love this kind of content, and Chef’s knowledge and insights of the game*. Was particularly interesting hearing about how 4th-through-7th evolved, as I was mostly a sporadic painter and modeller during those eras after playing increasingly intensely up to and through 3rd.

* Looking forward to updated tactical guides for 10th šŸ™‚

Really liked this Chef. Iā€™d be happy to see more of this style video. Maybe on the history of factions, how theyā€™ve developed over the years(more model and lore wise than rules). Or interesting off-shoots from 40K, Space Hulk, Gorkamorka, and Necromunda. Thanks

Thanks for this video, Chef. It took me back to humble beginnings of a 2nd hand Ork army in 2nd edition and through memories of games in every edition since.

Great video. You guys did a really good job on that. Got a good nostalgia hit of playing space marines versus tyranids with my buddies on the kitchen table for the first time in third. Getting my first army box of dark eldar (back when they made real army boxes). Miss those like the way I miss initiative and vehicles staying as terrain on the battle field. Guess theirs a lot more of them in the table now a days.

Absolutely fantastic video, and a great little nostalgia trip back to 4th ed during school. I’d love more! Especially on the 7th edition supplements, the idea that you’d have whole books dedicated to Harlequins or Haemonculus Covens is super interesting to someone who dabbled in 4th and only came back in 9th

WoW i didnt know warhammer 40k had a GM back then , like DnD :O
Question: The first box Chief showed was blood angles, the second was black templars, but a glims of the rule shown on the screen refered them as spacemarines. This is past HH, wasnt there shapters back then?

Thanks for the video! I’ve played since late 3rd Edition, so getting to see the roots of 40k and how the changes came up to that point was really interesting. Also brought back fun memories from the latter editions and the silliness of rules, like my Guard squads blocking shooting at my tanks šŸ˜† Really enjoying the podcasts and these “different” style of content in addition to the batreps, gives something extra to watch.

I love history! And specifically, the history of various niche subcultures, like this one! I know it would be too massive an undertaking to ever be done but I long for a like… 10 hour documentary on the comprehensive history of 40k. You know, “X edition was also the heyday of this artist and these sculptors and the competitive scene was dominated by X players and Y factions. The story at this point was XYZ and we was the first introduction of Z character and Y faction” But this was lovely! As a relatively new player I’m fascinated by the… Read more Ā»

I like the simplicity of 10th, but I miss some of the old rules. It’s frustrating that fluff comes with jank. I would love to see you guys run a game with “best picks” rules from previous editions. Blast templates, scatter dice, and disabling vehicles….. no idea how it would be done and might be more effort than it’s worth…. I wish to witness the banesword have it’s cannon disabled or abbadon deepstrike himself to death

Hey Chef! Great video. The format and theme is a really great addition to to excellent content already on offer.
I know it’d be a lot, but a similar history overview would be cool for lore. Perhaps a series, moving from general to closer themes or factions. Like I said, a lot of work, but but I bet you guys would do a sterling job of it!

Guys that was BOSS!! you’ve helped me answer a haunting question… what edition did I start in and how much did I miss???
Turns out I started in 3rd ed and missed a whole bunch of crazy rogue trader and 2nd ed shinnegans!! Thanks for the awesome content šŸ˜

Just finished watching over on YouTube, but wanted to pop over here to say awesome job on this video! Loved so many parts of it, major kudos to Professor Chef and Teaching Assistant Beard for taking us through this walk down Warhammer history.

I’d love to see more in this vein of content if you bosses ever get the chance to make more!

I appreciated the video but i think i would have preferred it to be on the jumps from edition to edition. If it makes sense.
Side by sides of the same area of the game, in order to understand the evolution more than the bulk, for lack of a better word, of the rule sets. And maybe multiple smaller videos.
I am definitely interested in those new ventures and i imagine the next step is a history of the crews’ favorite units throughout the editions? But i’ll surely be watching for the next vids you do, however they’re done šŸ™‚

Chef (and Beard!) this was masterfully done. I’d love to see more like this, diving into the “off the table” history of the game, Games Workshop, and even the industry as a whole.
You’ve quite literally made my morning with this project. Hope to see more like it!

Ah that made me feel horribly old! Been playing since 1995 and have played every edition since. I agree with pretty much everything chef says here and it’s, well not “depressing” but more exasperating how history keeps repeating itself. I think they’re, (finally) learning though. I can’t stress enough how much better the codex and errats releases are now. Sisters of battle got their first codex in 2nd didn’t get there own, solo, physical, codex for OVER A DECADE! They did get a duo codex in 5th with the Ordo Hereticus.Witch Hunters is still my favourite implementation of the faith… Read more Ā»
