Now that we know of the new Chapter Tactics for Space Marines, no wonder Spider forgot to do his “re-roll a single hit roll” for the first couple of turns. He was playing with the new Chapter Tactics all along. Sneaky Spider ! 😉
Interesting game if to just back luck for Chef in general. Do have a 9th Edition Rules question though. So Lawrence moves with his Impulsor and then disembarked with his troops. I assumed when I first saw this that was a change to transports. However, when I got the 9th ED rules download it still says that’s not a thing. Is that a Salamanders thing, was it a Playtest thing that was dropped at the end? Or have I missed something?
So what does the new Szarekhan Dynasty do then guys? You can tell me, on the internet… It’s a safe space…
Why was Quantum Shielding stoping the Warsuits fists on a dice role of 3? Don’t you have to role under the damage amount, so only 1’s and 2’s as the fists are damage 3
Hi All,
I have the LGT Tournament Terrain pack. Which is great. however with the changes in ruin rules, do you think I should make the windows into actual windows again. To allow them to work as GW intend ruins to work in 9th, with windows for units inside the terrain to see out of and be seen into?
I worry I am at risk of neutering my game experience with these simplified L shape ruins.
Stay Safe
I have noticed that both 9th edition battle reports are external war missions. 9th is still going to have melstrom.
Roll on 9th ed. He already knows it, but yeah, Chef made some big old tactical booboos in this one. Always backline the DDAs, they have range for days and if they need to move, they’re pretty nippy and have fly. You want to attract fire with the Lychguard, so you need to hide other targets and force your enemies guns into them. I also thin Sautekh has lost most of its luster with 9th changes. Ignoring move and fire heavy now affects zero of your units, since no infantry have a heavy weapon and we can’t stack pluses to… Read more »
Loved the camerawork there! Panning down to the table during dicerolls is great and adds a lot of dynamism to the game. Its always been one of my gripes that sometimes we spend more time looking at dices than models. Anyhow, great changes!
Awesome video!! Like everytime!! Good Job!
Just one think, for the next time, when the invictor (like all primaris vehicle) expledes, he makes D6 Mortal Wounds, not D3.
Thanks for all guys <3
What points values are being used here? Are the from the upcoming CA, or existing 8th ed points?
Be nice to your dice, Chef ?
Damn those new microphones sound so crisp.
Best battle report audio out there.
I love the dicey role addition to the table guys. Makes it all feel a bit less like a couple of guys hanging out playing warhammer and having a laugh, but I think thats kinda where things are going. Either way, theres a piece of me so satisfied to see the dice in view every roll. Alas no more dramatic command point re roll and the inevitable fate of the die falling off the table.
This game aside. I think in 9th we are going to see more space marine (and associated armies, Grey Knights, Custodes etc) than ever before. As great as I can see they are in terms of improving the game as a whole and removing the janky and weird things in the meta, the balance just does not seem right as I cannot see a single one of the major rule changes that have had a negative effect on primaris marines. And the points increases just do not go far enough to show how strong they are across the board. Then… Read more »
I feel anything involving the Necrons at this stage is going to be massively underwhelming given they are about to receive an insane amount of new toys which look unbelievably cool and would hope make them a lot more powerful.
P.S you guys ever thought of getting the giant ForgeWorld Necron Knight thingy?
PPS I would have loved to see Chefs reaction to the Void Dragon C’tan.
A lot of people are going crazy about the space marines but Spider’s luck aside, Chef made some mistakes. Should have used the autopass stratagem, used the re-roll stratagem for his Will Be Backs, and most importantly should have deployed more defensively. There were too many things out in the open, I get wanting fire lanes for your stuff but your Necrons, your whole point is to make your opponents turn mean nothing. So you deploy very conservatively and I think putting something in reserve was the smart thing to do, I don’t know if it should have been the… Read more »
I’m not going to lie. I had to walk away from this game after Laurence fired the Incendium Cannon at 34 minutes into the game and scored 9 wounds out of 10 hits. It took me a day to come back to the game so I could listen to the 9th Edition comments from the players. I’m always confused when I look at Marines armies. They always look balanced and fun and then as soon as they get on the table the opposition just gets owned.
Just a question; the Invictor that was taken out by the other invictor exploding – shouldn’t that one be rolled for Explode as well?
I think i understand 9th now. Spoiler

Two people roll some dice and at the end of the day the marine player wins. I do hope they balance things out with chapter approved and whatever else.
Lawrence hits Chef with the MASSIVE disrespect at 58:32. How will he recover?! In all honesty, gents – Great report as usual.
By the looks of things 9th has done nothing to curb the obnoxious power of marines. Even without Lawrence’s incredible rolling (and Chef’s terrible luck) I think this was only likely to go one way.
To be more positive, the batreps look absolutely amazing! Absolutely the best produced 40k show on youtube, and the competition aren’t even close.
Loved seeing other necron units! Great work guys!
Chef, are there any rules in 9th that will make you unable to deploy the Doomsday arks on top of the gantries, such that you would have guaranteed avoiding them being tied down by vehicles? Or are the gantries less than 5” tall so they could be charged from the ground anyway?
Thank you for the battle report!
Since a lot of missions now concentrate even more on holding multiple objectives, how Nihilakh dynasty is looking in 9th?
As always great batrep – I was really deligted when I heard you guys are official playtesters which really makes me confident that we will get a great 9th edition! Please keep on the great work. Thanks for the Chef not giving up! My experience with reserves in the past is that it can make sense for valnurable, hard hitting units that the opponent will most likely kill turn 1. My havocs will be a good example for that, or the new eradicators. In general I always prefer more assets on the table, especially if you go second as that… Read more »
Great game guys showing off a load of the new features. I like to think that Chef purposefully made the greatest sacrifice just to show us viewers all the cool stuff!
Put all the green dice in a circle around one single green dice. Make sure that there is some space between the circle and the lone dice.
Now, do one of the following:
a) Hit the single dice with a hammer, shattering it.
b) Pour some fire-lighting fluid on the lone dice and set it on fire. (Should any of the other dice also catch fire, they’re deemed guilty as well and put next to the central one.)
Make sure that the rest of the dice have understood.
My 2 armies yay! Which team of mine shall I root for?
Also share that necron pain Chef. Oof, excited for 9th but they reeeeeally need that new codex
Oof after that much getting tagged first turn it was going to be a tough fight for the crons. I think it really emphasizes though to me how defenseless those annihilation barges can be. If they move they do not fire at full effect. If they get tagged they cannot fire their big gun. If tagged no friendly model can jump in to the combat to help kill the tagging unit. Those guys need super safe homes since they don’t want to reposition to a safer location and won’t be able to get themselves out unless it is a small… Read more »
Oh Chef…. I feel your pain!
Great report, if a bit lopsided but that happens sometimes. Really exited for 9th.
What did you guys think of incursion games when you were playtesting? I think I’ll mostly be playing incursion games during 9th, be great to know what you guys think about those games
Honestly I feel that at this point the games are more tutorials and examples of what is to come.
I would like to ask and hopefully you can answer – The chain sword wielding marines are troops? And looking at what has been revealed – stormshields now give a 4+ invun save and gives +1 to your save – does this apply to both or is it clarified in the rules?
So if I understand correctly, D3 blast weapons will have full 3 shots against 6+model units. What about say 3D3 weapons? Would it be 9 or 3 (the latter would mean blast on such weapons would not work unless attacking a 11+ model unit).I have seen 3 different interpretations of that rule lol.
…. Is Chef the new Beard? (Luckwise)
Great batrep, guys. I really appreciate the time taken to introduce us to 9e and walk us through some of the new rules. Tough luck on the dice rolls, Chef, but thanks for the upbeat attitude throughout. I normally enjoy the snarkiness that comes from a spate of bad dice turns, but it was important to be upbeat for this intro to a new rule set, so good on you for the great attitude. <tips cap> Now that I’ve seen two 9e batreps here, I noticed that the game seems to be stacked against whoever goes second. Because you alternately… Read more »
Space Marines got a points hike? Reaaaally doesn’t seem like it.
This is depressing to watch, Space Marines are even BETTER in 9th ed which I didn’t think was possible. I’m going to shelve my own Space Marines because they are quickly going to become the new Tau from 7th ed, and just break out my AdMech and design them to kill Primaris because that’s all I am probably ever going to play against.
Challenge accepted! The Void Dragon rises! Cawl’s heresy must be answered!
This was expected given you set up the 9th equivalent of planet bowling ball so firepower could be focused on whatever you wanted and the first turn was a big swing. That middle ruin was completely useless. Had it been a real ruin the game would have been a lot different. Would have been nice to see some more meaningful terrain use. 7 Vehicles that had zero impact to any terrain vs only 3 units on the Necron side capable of doing significant damage to those vehicles. Lawrence overloaded vehicle toughness on his army which exploited the lack of anti-vehicle… Read more »
Hey guys, thanks for the content – as always, you make the best batreps out there, and I’m a genuine fan. Hard truth time now though – I’m disappointed with this as a showcase of 9th. As soon as I saw the lists, I knew this would be an absolute battering. What’s the point in putting one of the weakest books of the last 3 years against the strongest? I feel like showcase matchups need to be managed carefully – if you want to show the overpowered space marines to your audience (because they’re the most popular faction: makes sense)… Read more »
Bit worried that every game of 9th I’ve seen has been decided by an early move towards the middle of the board by the player with 1st turn. Seems like once one faction gets that board presence, it just becomes too hard for the 2nd turn player to hit back.
Hope this isn’t the case though, I was just really excited about 9th maybe making games less one-sided and maybe making melee better and it’s just not coming across that way for now.
Great work though, as ever, you guys even make games like this fun to watch ?
….. does chef already hate 9th? I worry about what he cant say….
I am super excited for 9th but between facebook and that now I am a bit bummed due to people
Give us the rant Chef! We’re all salty son’s-of-witches here, give it to us straight!! Cry out to the sky “G*DDAMMIT, STOP LETTING M*THERFRICKIN’ SPIDER HAVE SUCH GOOD G*DDAMN ROLLS!!!!!” Then you can go join Bone as a plant in the garden.
Welcome back, its good to see you again. The studio isn’t the same without the the entire Mournival.
Heads up: The mission description audio is only on the left channel!
Chef, please for the love of Necrons, throw those green dice away. They’ve been cursing your games for too long. Be gone foul dice!!!
Another good show!
As always guys a great Batrep! Very intriguing the mentions of more to come and the core rules just being a small part of it. Keep up the good work.
Hi, awesome battle Report. Is it intended that the Mission description in Mono Sound? I only hear that on one ear.
I absolutely love how you guys explain new rules and what could have been done differently. (Specifically with deploying the Destroyers using obscuring terrain)
Props to Chef for sticking this game out, that first turn was HORRENDOUS.
“Ah… it translate to three saves” [bad ninja pose]
Peak Lawrence
Hi guys, great to see another 9th edition report. Your production has improved so much over the last year, and I didn’t even think there was something to improve. Pleasure to see Chef back, although his two 9th edition games so far might be considered a form of torture. Looking forward to more games of the 9th. I was contemplating the new rules and I would say they are pretty cool and logical. However from the balance point of view, some armies got boosted, some nerfed, but I couldn’t really found anything that would hurt Space Marines as a faction.… Read more »
Felt a bit disheartened watching this. Chef obviously was a bit unlucky on dice and made a few errors in deployment etc but it honestly felt like Lawrence had 2000 points and Chef 1700.. For a while I kept thinking Chef had forgotten to bring in some units from reserve or something.. I mean I really hope that’s just that Necrons REALLY needing their update (both the new units and a codex which I’m guessing is coming very soon) but otherwise it looks like same old OP Space Marines. Perhaps a little bit of Lawrence being the strongest player on… Read more »
